Looking to set up a basic (for now) website but it apears to be a bit of a minefiled with domain registrar's, hosts etc and it's all very confusing. If it was metal I'd be ok.
Initially just want to have a gallery of what I do, some 'about us' details and contact page.

Any good tips on how to go about it, who to use for registrar and host etc would be very, very gratefully received

- Go to www.tsohost.com

- Buy a domain with cloud hosting

- Set up a simple Wordpress site

It's not hard, if you can use Office then you can easily do all that. TSOHost are really good.

will be doing Facebok, initially, but want a more professional look. Will have some time to work on the website to get it set up nicely.

Plugging my own stuff, and bearing in mind that I'm a bicycle builder not an IT professional, these three are all my sites done in Wordpress with TSOHost:

http://www.kinetics-online.co.uk/
http://www.transientplaces.co.uk/
http://www.maryhillpark.org/

Hosting for these, plus a couple of others, costs £5 per month.

+1 for tso host

Built my own blog site this year, using a theme that I purchased separately.

Bit of a learning curve but not too hard and quite rewarding.

My site is unduro.co.UK - if you want to see what a non-techy can come up with.

Try Forthhosting, I bought one of his 99p hosting packages off ebay
something like 4 years ago, I have since moved a few websites over to
them. Alex seems happy to answer[even my stupid] question pretty quickly.
I have no idea about Wordpress or anything like that I learnt to write html in the 90's[it's very easy] and I just hand write them; I tried Dreamweaver when it came out, I was appalled at the amount of code it generated.

There are more idiot-proof ways to make a website these days. Check out 'DIY' website builders*:
- uk.godaddy.com/websites/website-builder

*I work for one of the above...not telling which one.

I wouldn't touch fasthosts with a very big barge pole, the bunch of useless numpties that they are. Never have I had so much pain using them for websites, especially when it came to their 'support'. Raise a ticket, and somebody might respond within a day, and eventualy fix the problem a couple weeks later. Oh how glad I was when the minimum contract time was up.

I now mainly use UnitedHosting. Not the cheapest, but the longest I've ever had to wait for a support response is 47minutes. And they even fixed the problem before replying.

I use godaddy for all my domain names, and I know several people who use them for hosting without any major problems. Not the fastest to respond, but good enough for non-critical websites.
