I've picked up a banana Republic trench coat for smart spring and autumn wear but I'd quite like to make it a bit more 'waterproof' if I can. I don't mind if it's appearance changes a bit as I picked it up pre owned and very cheap, I'm just after something smarter then my berghaus proper waterproof, but with a half decent 'waterproofness'. It's a polycotton fabric with minimal/ light water resistance, so in any rain for more than a minute it's getting damp. I don't mind reducing its breathability if I have to trade that for more waterproofing, this is a coat used for short strolls not hikes.
I'm trying to decide between leave as is, give it a good spray with nikwax or grangers tx direct, or give it a good going over with soft wax in a barbour sort of style.
Is one better than the other? Are either worthwhile? Or should I leave as is?
And no, I don't find a brolly a convenient thing to use!
Sounds like the sort of thing that it would be a shame to mess up with waxy coatings.
Well yes. It's this sort of thing

And I'd like to keep it looking decent, but since I only paid £35 for it I don't mind taking a chance.
Tried washing in nikki wax and then a aerosol top off?

No I've not tried anything yet, I'm trying to decide what approach might be worth a try.
Already said I don't like brolly use. I've often got hands full holding little kids hands or their stuff, find brollies large enough to give protection are wide and awkward to pass other pedestrians considerately, and useless in a stiff breeze.
