The UK, Dutch & USA Police cycle units working to IPMBA are still taught those techniques, plus others.

Great self defense instructions from 1901. Need to get a super soaker for the commuter now.

What tyres for knocking out tramps?

What wheelsize for escaping purse snatchers?

Anyone else have a compelling need to watch Ed Oxley demonstrate that last one and "Leap bravely from his machine"??/ 😉

That last one looks as if he's positioned himself for an unexpected dribble of spit in the eye - always a winning move...

Those Victorian girl cyclists were quite formidable if a bit unfit for society.

Amongst the does and don'ts were "Don't strike a match on your bloomers"

The origin of "hot chicks"?

not sure about that, but women loosening their corsets (or taking them off) to ride bikes was the origin of 'loose women'.
not too far off topic is the fancy cycling book[img] [/img]

That's great!
& just goes to show that the best bicycle frame material for fights is steel.

I can confirm that steel frames make the best shields as I found out a few weeks ago after being attacked by two freeking massive Bullmastiffs in a forest on a night ride with no owner in sight.

Wasn't there a chapter in the early Richard's Book of the Bike dealing with defence against dogs? The first point was to get the bike between you and the dog(s). He then went on to demonstrate how to kill said dogs with your pump! Not sure his proposed technique would work with mini pumps or c02 cartridges though.

You have to use the CO2 cartridge like the air cylinder in Jaws 😀

I read somewhere (probably here) that the answer was to hold the pump between your hands, allow the dog to clamp its jaws between your hands, then lift upwards bringing the dog to near vertical (best do this bit quickly) and kick it hard between the back legs. I suspect this is one of those things that is all well and good in theory but maybe not advisable in practice.

fancy cycling book

Cracking.

I'm going to sort out a steel fixie for bike tricks.

bringing the dog to near vertical (best do this bit quickly) and kick it hard between the back legs

may not work if neutered...
