Been struggling for a while to find a way of using Streetview on the ipad, it is meant to work on google maps but I can't see it. Is this user error or should I be using a particular app?
Google maps app does it I think.

Try Live Street View app. There may be other ways but that works well.

Yes iphone google app works on Ipad (in x2 mode) but finding street view isn't obvious. You need to type in a place name or address/postcode and tap the info bar at the bottom that opens, and then on the "mini" street view window to open street view in full screen.
