One of my daughters is a student in Cardiff. Because of her clinical skills she got a job turning ventilated Covid 19 patients when they were intubated.
She has never had a job before and has an unused personal tax allowance of c.£12500.
The job earnt her £600 and she was taxed at the standard rate as well as NI.
She wont be working again this financial year, so shouldnt have paid tax on this sum.
How does she claim it back? She feels a little fed up that she lives on not much money and has now been taxed
Thanks
Ian
You phone them up and ask them.
I've generally found them very helpful on the phone. Including the time I found a 3 year old rebate cheque that they instantly sorted plus the interest it had earned 😀
She will get it back next year if she does nothing. They tend to tax first and sort out after.
Plus one for calling them and speaking to a person - I was on the wrong tax rate for three years (to my shame, and yes First World Problems) anyway they were super helpful and the refund hit my bank account 3 days later.
I did have to sit on hold for about an hour but it was worth it.
Thanks all, she is calling them today

+1 for calling, maybe with a book to read while waiting to get through, but always been quick to sort out any changes once you get through to someone.
She'll need to call, mainly if she's not earning, it won't come back via her pay. My son had this last year, working full time, then no job (well pizza delivery) - was on emergency tax for a while, but got it back at tax year end via pay - when he needed it. He's now again out of full time work, so will need to chase any tax he's paid as on part time again.
We get it alot from folk doing lectures at work. They moan they've only had half of their £500 fee. By Law (IR35) we've got to deduct tax and NI from any payment we make to individuals. They get all upset, and you've got to explain it to them and that any over payment in tax or NI will even out in their tax returns. Then you find out they are alreay in full time work paying high rate tax. People just don't get it.
They tend to tax first and sort out after.
It'll be deducted at source by her employer.
Just phone up HMRC at the end of the tax year and they'll refund her.
