You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Is there anyway to find out how many hits/visits a website that you dont own gets? Interested in seeing how many unique visits a competitor gets to their website to see if it is worthwhile in investing in something similar ourselves?
We are in an industry that traditionally doesnt sell online but our competitors do
alexa.com might be useful
Not directly, but you might be able to use Google Analytics to see what traffic trends are going to what site. No idea how though.
Alexa is the one you want. It'll give you a comparison to your own website. Short of that, hack their Google Analytics or webserver but that's probably disproportionate.

is their turnover increasign faster than yours?
if it is and all you perceive they are doign differently is web then I'd join them.
sometimes it's as much about perception as anythign else - if you're the only ones with no online presence you coudl be seen as 'old fashioned' etc.
If the cost to get in is millions then it may be a different matter but if you could get somethign up and running and start using google analytics on it you'd be abel to see if the investment was worth taking further.
They are a much larger company and we tend to complete more bespoke projects but if we could earn some extra revenue by selling online then it is always nice. We have got an online prescence but very little if any sales enquiries come through the web which is why I would be surprised if it dramatically increased parts sales
I wouldn't want to base a business decision on information form Alexa. The figures are only obtained from Alexa toolbar users.
There is no accurate way to find out traffic to a site you do not own.
And even if you could page views/unique visitors does not tell you anything about the quality of the traffic.
With regard to your last post Rob,
you don't necessarily have to sell on line to get more business from having a website.
exactly how this works depends what industry you are in but for example the company i work for has a strong web presence yet we don't even sell to the end user, who all our sites are aimed at.
and this is tied in with another point, that websites can lead to offline sales as well as on-line sales. something that a lot of people seem to overlook.
