We need to get across to Whitby from Harrogate today (stranded in-laws) but I can't find much information on the Highways England website regarding conditions. We know it was reasonably clear yesterday when we took the long route back (avoided the NY Moors so came back via Scarborough and the A64) and we could go back that way today but we'd rather go more directly as it will save a chunk of time but I cannot find any information! Thank you.

Derbyshire council is good at reporting closures and problems with snow, and the Police, so check the local councils social media maybe.

I hate to say it but Spotted on FB is often pretty good. It's flooding round here today, but local groups are posting up where the bad spots are.

And edited to add its better to take a longer route that's open than take longer to do a shortcut that might risk yours and other people's lives. The emergency services are stretched enough.

Look at the Traffic overlay on Google Maps.

I checked the North Yorkshire Council website and there is nothing showing but I will check Google Maps - that's a good shout, thank you.

Of course – I am not going to risk anything (hence the long way back yesterday), but if the roads are clear then I would rather save 1.5 hours!

North Yorks council have a road cameras and conditions page. Won't necessarily be exactly the roads you want to look at, but will give a reasonable view as to the road conditions generally.

Traffic overlays on Google don't work around here, when it's flooded the shows as green and not busy. Google maps will also drive you round in circles back to the same closed road even when reporting it as closed/blocked, alternative routes won't route any other option than the one flooded road.

AA site used to be pretty good for maps showing problems, not looked recently.

North Yorkshire Weather Updates page on Facebook is fantastic and very active. Obviously mainly N Yorks based, but reports on snow all over the UK.

Thank you all - I think I have all I need now. Hole of Horcum looks clearer than it did *before* the heavy snow when we went over last Thursday so I think we will be good. 🙂

I'd just go up the A1, A19 and around the top of the NYM.

Google is saying its quicker, and its not risking any weather/incidents across the tops

There really is nothing in it (two cars setting off on Thursday from the same place but one via Hole of Horcum and the other over the top) and we arrived within a couple of minutes of each other. But yes, that is a consideration.

When the admins aren't bored and drumming up hate-clicks with photos of gollywogs or helmet cam footage of cyclists getting knocked off.

I still check it when visiting my parents in bad weather as they're good at reporting the flooding around around Hawes / Bainbridge which can be a meter deep in a matter of minutes or the road over Ribblehead as the admins live at Newby Head (the farm at the top with the big sign advertising fresh cakes)..

It takes a lot to make me boycott cake, but that and seasons bakery being at the bottom of the hill did it for me ?

Same - it can take a while for Google Maps to realise the issues and update plus it relies quite heavily on people reporting problems.

So, after spending the morning working out how to get them back, they have set off by themselves FFS.
