To think that towing a LWB Mercedes Sprinter van at 75mph with a Mondeo on the M1 is a good idea? Not sure what the stopping distance is with 2.5 tonnes of unbraked van behind you is but must be enormous.

I don’t know whether it’s ignorance or simply recklessness.

Was the driver on the phone too? Maybe a camera could stop this sort of thing....

Ahh, speeding too..

#naughty

It'll be on camera, don't worry. It'll catch up with them soon enough.

Pretty thick I'd say. I seen a bloke yesterday on the M1 in the outside lane doing at least 85 mph in his new Rangey pulling a mahoosive caravan.. I'd say at least as thick as that then some.

Big differfence  between  a MOndeo towing at approx 4 x his unbraked  trailer weight , and a Range Rover towing at or more likely below his braked  trailer weight.

Range Rovers used to have  a huge towing capability, doesnt  mean it can stop in straight line safely and in a straight line though, as for a Mundane stopping quickly ... I hope he had retro fitted an ejector seat.

My bro's insurance office had a claim where a  Pug 405 towing a caravan down a hill had been over -run by the caravan and ended up doing an endo down a  long hill with the rear wheels in the air , till it  embedded itself in  a  wall

What was he towing him with? On a trailer or rigid tow or just a bit of rope?

"What was he towing him with? On a trailer or rigid tow or just a bit of rope"

All of them are illigal and only marginally better than each other.

The only way it would be remotely acceptable and even then at the discretion of the attending officer would be to pull you out of danger to a place of safety if absolutely no other option.....

Certainly not at 75 mph

See that’s why he was going fast. Reducing his chances of getting caught, as if was spotted, he was always going to get busted.

Well how do you know it's unbraked? I appreciate the speed is a little bit cheeky but hey who needs servo assisted brakes? He might have even been using a dab of the handbrake as well. 😉

Technically, if he was towing the van with it’s engine running, and the towed driver is on the ball, there’s a hell of a lot of braking available. In fact, I reckon the van could easily bring the mondeo to a halt without the mondeo driver ever touching his brakes...

still dodgier than a dodgy dodge dodging stuff in dodge city though...

All 4 wheels on the road on some sort of solid hitch with no driver in the van, so completely unbraked.

with no driver in the van

You sure? Would have to be some sort of towing dolly for that to work I think. Towed vehicle is usually modded for one of them and becomes a ‘trailer’ (legal grey area) a la towing a cinquecento with a camper van.

On an a frame there's no steering input required.

Also the tow weight will be under however any trailer over 750kg should be braked

Are you sure the van was being towed? Most Sprinters tailgate closely enough to look like they are attached to the vehicle in front.

Doesn't have to be anybody in the car for it to be braked.

One of our customers at work sells a motor driven system that proportionally applies the brakes in accordance with how much the main car does so.

Not sure how reliable that would be with a car towing a van of course, but it is possible.
