You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
This popped into my google news feed this morning. They have a lot of Hebridean islands and Glens to go after with these special editions - I wonder how far they will push that price....
Yes, that is £245k for an old style Defender...
Presumably this is aimed at a small number of estate-owning oligarchs who want to feel authentic.
Judging by the 'driving on a beach' promo pic it'll need a new bulkhead and chassis soon...
Insane.
I'd love a 110 but at 250k you can think again.
Was like that mini oseli wanted 60k for
Mental
I am currently storing a Series 1 for my nephew prior to sale.
It's in really excellent condition. I casually asked how much they were looking for "somewhere between £50-70k"
Blimey..... I'd better take are when getting the mower out of the barn!!
Occasionally one will be spotted in an old barn or farm yard (out on a rural ride), just ripe for the right person to renovate.

In which case, I know of at least a dozen of these locally, got to be worth £10k each...

I used to be a full on paid up member of the Defender club, been on the Solihull factory tour, owned a 110, drove it to Africa, rebuilt it twice.
Nowadays I couldn't hate the company more. New Defender is an absolute travesty, Discovery 5 is a big amorphous blob, £200k+ special edition prices are just plainly ridiculous and the rebranding and dropping of Landrover is just mental.
Volvo for life.
yep, passed one such place at the weekend, at least 3 defenders and an old Lotus plus others I couldn’t identify, just rotting away outside. Shame really.Occasionally one will be spotted in an old barn or farm yard (out on a rural ride)
Every example is specially selected and reengineered, with the Defender Suspension Upgrade Kit comprising uniquely tuned suspension that’s tailored for enhanced on-road comfort and dynamics,
All that faff about authenticity and off road history and they're selling it especially to be driven ON the road. It's like cognitive dissonance in sales guff form.
There was an article on PH the other day for an electric mk1 Range Rover. Seem to remember that was about £250k as well... madness. Although there was also a classic Mini a dealer was selling too for £150k.
I know let's take a common utility vehicle, take it out of production, wait a few decades before bringing it back as a status symbol minus the utility at prices only the very wealthiest can afford.

FTFY
Seeing as pretty much all spares are available for Defenders has anyone costed how much it would be to just build a new one from scratch? Bet it's not £250k!
With the labour costs as well for a high end back to new spec?
This is a restoration of an old vehicle. to do it to such a high level of spec is very expensive. 1000 hours of top level labour is £120000 ish and it could take more than a 1000 hours
Look at the rebuilt classics like e types and so on you can buy. or even the rebuilt reengined VW campers.
Is it a restoration or is it essentially a handbuilt 90?
Would prefer one of these... https://www.arkonik.com/en-GB/inventory/#vehicles
Each one is comprehensively restored, re-engineered and upgraded, utilising donor vehicles from 2012-2016.
From their blurb. So I am assuming a full strip down every nut and bolt and rebuild with new parts as needed and all old parts refurbished - with a brand new engine and gearbox.
I also assume they're not going to the bother of adding modern niceties such as airbags, which I thought was a contributing factor to them redesigning it. I have no idea on the legalities of such things but does the fact that it's marketed as a restored and upgraded vehicle (instead of a new one) affect their ability to sell it?

Not that much, bear in mind that Defenders were basically hand built* right upto the last one there isn't really a whole lot more effort/work to build one in a workshop than on a production line.
*or at least in a recognizably 1950's labor intensive way, it's still a box on frame with everything bolting on in a typically modular/inefficient way.

There's a strange grey area (legislative mess of red tape) at the moment around any sort of restoration/modification.
Legally welding up a rusty chassis for an MOT is outside the letter of the law at the moment (which is ridiculous, and every garage still does it). It came about because DVSA stated you can't modify the vehicles chassis, which has been interpreted very strictly to even include things like drilling the bulkhead for wiring!
INSPIRED BY SPENCER WILKS’ PERSONAL VEHICLE FROM 1965
no its not ......
Aye, here is Spencer's wagon:

Thanks, but I think I’ll wait for the Isle of Mull edition, held together with gaffer tape and baler twine, with a blown exhaust and the cargo area modelled on a plastic fish box filled with various bits of farming and fishing detritus. Tyres will be near bald/barely legal and there will be an LED light bar that will blind you from 200 yards.
After watching my brother and best mate rebuild their Series 1s, I think that most
Landie restorations should be classified as a form of self harm. 😆 🤣 😂

Best not ask what the Jura edition is then....
And will they dare make a Teuchter Wagon edition?
the depreciation will be "eye watering".
the depreciation will be “eye watering”.
Will it though ? they’ll likely sell all 30.

My mates got 5 in his barn - he didn't intentionally collect them, he'd just buy them cheap use them to get about the fields and woods where he lived until they were knackered and get another one for less than it would cost to repair. He's been meaning to restore (or at least renovate) them as sell them but they're happily appreciating in value while he does absolutely nothing with them so he's just happy to let them sit there.
The only thing the donor vehicles will be providing is the paperwork and chassis number 😆
Lease company have just scrapped a 2012 one we had at work, front chassis legs snapped whilst trying to unbolt the winch.
Crossmember on my work 64 plate 130 is starting to look like the surface of the moon.
Think they lasted better when they leaked more 🤣
With an old restored one costing £245k, the brand new ones are starting to look like a bargain by comparison!
Madness but not surprised, the restomod scene seems to be a license to print money. Twisted Landys are big money too.
Couple of restoration projects close to me...

There's an SWB pickup hidden behind that old Range Rover too

Ah, good old Scrapyard Farm! There's a good selection of Peugeot's in there too.
