I know theres probably a thousand variations but our washer gets stuck before the spin cycle. The book says possible problem with the outlet. The hose is all fine so I want to run the machine into a bucket to see if its the drainage etc. BUT, how big a bucket will I need? Normal carwash size, barrel or needs to go into a sink or you'll flood the house out? Cheers.

50 litres or so for the newer machines, more for older ones.

I am so glad I asked! Never imagined it would be that much. Thanks for saving the house from looking like a scene from 'the perfect storm'!! Cheers.

Odds on that sock you are missing is stuck in the outlet filter or some other part of the drainage.

Probably worth checking the filter if you haven't already.
