G.O wants to sell it, so how much is it worth?

Apparently it makes £100 million a year profit so what do you reckon? My thoughts are G.O will sell it for £10 and get a job on the board at some point in the future

2 large offices down the road in Birkenhead, now both closed as all the plans go online, and doing research into the Land Registry, they still dont have complete records of who owns which bit of land or property.

Are you putting that forward as a failing?

COMMUNIST!!!!

Why on earth would the government want the liability of something that contributes £100 million a year back into the exchequer?

Very under-staffed at the moment and as a consequence generally shockingly poor service. Too many chiefs.

Only civil service agency to make a profit. Of course the Tories want to privatise it. And announced it late at night before the Easter recess. Scheming ****s.

Do we want all land ownership records - however flawed at times - run by a private company? Thin end of wedge?

Of course service is disappointing. All experienced staff who could afford to will have left in the last 10 years. Austerity reduces recruitment and training. It is happening across the public sector, local and central government. Be careful what you vote for Britain. It's only going to get worse.

Just means charging more for records which means the solicitors can charge 10 times more for obtaining them.

Went on their online site recently to check some registry stuff and I swear it used to be free to get certain documents or a one off fee, but now there's a charge per document. Didn't find what I wanted anyway. Looking for Deed of Covenant as I'm missing a copy of one and I'm sure I've seen them before online, but can only seem to get the standard registry entry and plan now online. I could pay a solicitor to find it, but that will be a few hundred quid.

Of course they don't have complete records land is only registered when it is transferred so if it has not been transferred to a new owner since 1925 it will not be registered with them .

selling the land registry is a really really bad idea.

Profit?

Is that a real profit or just how much money is budgeted to be 'returned'?

Wrong, you can do it at any time.

still dont have complete records of who...

Coverage is at about 80% I'm told. It's up to you to register your land, not the LR

Looking for Deed of Covenant

The online Official Copies has an option to see all documents, not all will have been scanned upon registration.

The real issue is that when the private company makes mistakes the Government will foot the bill for it, they are retaining the guarantee!

Sorry not true, the IPO make a lot of money as well but that would be very tricky to privatise, they have looked at it a few times though.

Selling off the Land Registry is another decision of political dogma over good sense, just plain stupid.

I'm sure when I looked some years back when they initially went online, I saw previous Deeds of Covenants, but I had a copy of the ones relevant to me so didn't download them. Yet now I can't see any, just the basic stuff.

Their site now says you can download the title register (for a fee) but to get rest of the documents you have to fill in a paper form and send off (for another fee).

If it's worth something to you, you'll pay it.

If the Land Registry can get that from you, they will make a bigger profit.

If you are 'just interested' why bother giving you unlimited access?

A Land Registry strikes me as something that could be done OpenSource BlockChain style, rather than run by a govt or a company.

They've only really started trying to manage themsevles as a data owner rather than just a registry service, I don't think I'd like to update their database!

£100m per year or £800m-£1bn (?) now. Get rid of expensive future pension liabilities transfering them to private sector ?

Big question is what will the Land Registry be able to do with its database, selling access for marketing etc

Already seems to be a big market in reseller services offering to get land registry details for a fee. Plus of course aforementioned solicitors who've long been able to do the same for a massive fee for two minutes of work 😉
