Daughter is away in UK with step.kids and went to a chippy for a couple of portions of chips.
She texted me the price.
Not eaten chips from a chippy since pre COVID so I was shocked by the price.
So being out of economic reality can I ask,
How much is a standard portion of chips where you are?
£3.50 or £4 depending on size. 😳
How much did you pay pre COVID?
£2.20
I think around £2.50 for a bag around here 🤔. North Manchester.
About £2.50 I think for a standard portion. Like all restaurants and takeaways prices have gone up considerably in recent years.
And Fish is £7 and more
£2.30 and not a penny more.
Just spuds innit.
£3.50-£4 for a large portion around here.
The size of the portion on offer varies - phnarr phnarr.
£2.80 from my local chippy.
£2.90 at the local, south Leeds
Similar. £2.50 to £3, depending whether 'normal' or 'large'. I think the fish portions went up to £8 each recently, but they're quite big. Which isnt such a bad deal, considering we're a good way from the sea.
£2.40 when I bought some a couple of weeks ago. And that was for a "small" portion.
Still ridiculously large though. Spuds must be very cheap otherwise I can't see why the portions are so generous. No normal person can comfortably eat that amount of chips in one go.
£2.80 for a v small portion here though as even having ten chips fills me & can safely say stuffed!
£4 for a small in my local chippy. Small is just about enough for 2 people. Cod to go with the chips? That'll be another £8.50 please.
Dunno about 1 portion, But a jumbo sausage & chips from my local is £3.90.
Was £3.50 about a year ago, then it went up to £3.75, and just recently gone to £3.90.
2-3 quid here
Fish supper is a tenner or thereabouts these days although pre COVID we got tapped up for 14 quid once in st Andrews. We shared one between us
Seems to be a big variation by location though, got a cracking supper in Kilmarnock for 6 pound not long ago
My local in Bristol is £2.90 for a small, £3.90 for a large.
We normally get a small between the two of us, and don't usually finish it!
Around £3.50 for medium chips at local takeaways (South East England). Most Medium portions are easily enough for 2 though. Up from around £2.50 two years ago. It's the fish you need a mortgage for! Medium cod was around £4 a couple of years a go, now £6 to £8 (not including chips).
£1.70 at the one I dare risk.Others are cheaper.
Ambleside £4.20 for a portion of chips.
Pre COVID paid around a £1.00.
When I were a lad it was 15 pence a portion of chips, scrapings were a penny
Mars bars were 9p, and I remember the outrage when they went to 11p and my pocket money was no longer enough for one
I can remember it was something like 2/6D when I was little........... (25p give or take)
£2.50 for a regular portion from Thompson's in Bury last Saturday.
£3.00 small, £3.70 regular, £4.90 large. Regular is plenty for two people.
About £8-10 for a fish supper at my local chippy.
Think about £2.40 last time I went was intrigued by Irish curry so got that as well (pretty 🔥)
Still ridiculously large though. Spuds must be very cheap otherwise I can’t see why the portions are so generous. No normal person can comfortably eat that amount of chips in one go.
Agreed. Mrs Slow and I make do with one between us.
Reminds me of the chippy in Settle years ago. I just wanted a fish.
"What so no chips"?
"Yes, just a fish please".
The fish arrived wrapped.
"I've put you a few chips in".
£2 small
£3 large
Large does two hungry people with chips left over
Paid 3.15 for small chips on my lunch break today from tourist/seafront chippy.
We usually find a single large chips for two adults and two under 8s from our local is sufficient. Can't remember price, but the days of fish'n'chips being chip are gone.
Err....3 quid I think, that is the standard, 3.50 for large. You won't eat a large. A standard is huge and feeds 2.
Think it was 3 quid for a bag of chips the other day in Cockermouth.
The chippy used to be the cheap takeaway compared to pizza or Chinese but it's not so different these days.
Had haddock and chips in Bingley a couple of weeks ago for the excellent price of £8 (would be £11.50 in my local chippy in Bristol).
No normal person can comfortably eat that amount of chips in one go.
Really? You’d be surprised…
When I were a lad it was 15 pence a portion of chips, scrapings were a penny
When I were a lad, a large bag with a shovelful of scrumps was 6d. The chippy was roughly halfway home from the cinema, I’d still be munching away by the time I got home.
*sigh* I really miss the scrumps with salt and vinegar, you could just get a bag of those if you just needed a snack. ‘Looks whistfully off into the distance…’
Oh, and I’m not sure how much chips are, there’s three chippy’s I use, it depends on where I am and what time of day, and whether I’ve got any cash - one only takes cash. Possibly £3-3.50 🤷🏼
Cheap as chips remember them days eh 😀
A lot of things seem to have gone stupid now. I look around at less fashionable businesses (non American brands, things not backed by social media trends) and there's a lot that look deserted most days of the week. Looks like there's going to be another shit load going under.

No normal person can comfortably eat that amount of chips in one go.
Stop trolling. And pass me the salt.
£1.99 for small, 2.99 for medium, 3.99 for large.
Large portion is enough for Mrs and me.
Charging for scraps? What sort of weird thing is that, they’ve always been free.
No normal person can comfortably eat that amount of chips in one go.
really?
About 30p per portion if you do them in a deep fat fryer at home. And generally better than those you buy in the local chippy.
No brainer.

I’ll keep that in mind next time away somewhere and fancy some chips.

I’ve never understood this argument. I don’t have the industrial quantities of fat, grease and MSG at home that make all takeaway food super delicious! As for not being able to comfortably eat a portion of chips by, I don’t even know what to say. When I was working long hours in a manually intensive job I used to eat a Domino’s meal deal for four by myself.
£2.50, £3.00, £4.20 for small, medium, large respectively. £4.50 for sweet potato ones.
Cod £6.50, £8.50, £16 for small, medium, large.
unsure how these website prices reflect current reality. Also, given some of the spelling, unsure of the accuracy. https://www.anchorsdidsbury.co.uk/takeaway-menu
From a cone to a sack
Always disappointed by cheesy chips when I’ve had them in the UK. A bit of cold, dry, cheap cheddar grated over the top of typical British chips* is not ‘cheesy chips’.
the cheese needs to be melted and velvety - like a nacho dipping sauce or a thick, cheesy gravy texture.
*thick cut, barely cooked beyond raw in the middle with a pale brown soft ‘crust’ creating what at best is warm, oily potato. 🤢
£2.20 for a cone at our regular chippy. Up to £4 for a large. A large will feed two fatties or three non-fatties. Chesterfield.
Pre COVID paid around a £1.00
By pre-covid do you mean 15 years ago? I've not seen a portion of chippy chips for £1 for a long time.
I’ll keep that in mind next time away somewhere and fancy some chips.
You just need a very long extension cable!
No brainer.
Sort of, but at the same time, nothing really like proper fish 'n' chip shop chips at all.
About 30p per portion if you do them in a deep fat fryer at home. And generally better than those you buy in the local chippy.
Where do you get your free oil from?
I just checked, I live three doors away from a mediocre chippy. £2.50 for regular chips, £5.00 for a fish.
The good chippy down the road is comparable prices, but a "small" chips will easily feed two as a main or three as a side.
Cambridgeshire village £2.50 standard, £3 large and the standard is enough for two people.
Bristol suburb £3.30 - £5, though the standard size is a big portion.
Somerset village £3.20 standard size which is a big portion, and really good chips.
Bridlington £3 for a medium portion.
It may only be potatoes but don't forget how expensive electricity is / has been for commercial premises.
The good chippy in Stroud -
Mini. £3
Regular £4
Large £5
Regular will feed two, large will sink a battleship
I would content that it is scientifically impossible to be full when eating (good) chips. The only thing that stops your eating is the end of the bag (and the shop being too far away to get another one) or titanic levels of self control because of 'health'.
I applaud you "one portion big enough for two" posters for your self control.....you weirdos.
£4.40 for the LARGE chips from our local. Enough for 3-4 people though.
£3.80 small and £5.90 for a large!
£3.80 small and £4.90 large at my local chippie. No way could one person eat a large portion tho 🙂
Regular will feed two, large will sink a battleship
I'm 5'8” and 75 kilos. I guarantee i can destroy any portion of chips put infront of me.
Aslong as they are actually nice.
Checked tonight. Fish £6, regular chips £2, large £2.50. The large did 3 of us. 2 fish between 3.
Just been to a posh seafood restaurant in Edinburgh for birthday tea. Fish and chips was £25 with minted pea puree and caper butter. Pricey, yes. Amazing, yes. (And that was just the kid's dinner 😐 )
^That's just taking the pee!
I don't think I've ever bought a bag/box/whatever of chips...
I used to have lightly battered fish and half a portion of chips for c8 quid. Far too many chips, not been for 2 years.
Actually, cycled to keswick last month so went to the one in the square, 15 quid sit in and they gave me about 4 pints of chilled water to rehydrate. That alone warranted a fiver tip, may be 16 quid and 4 quid tip but it was good.
I love chips (One of my weaknesses…). I couldn’t manage a large portion from a decent fish & chip shop though. I may be an outlier. I also can’t do a large piece of fish - if I have to have cod, I go for mini cod. To be honest and this diverges from this thread - I think plaice, haddock and hake are superior. Any fish I can’t manage - once I have removed the batter - the cat loves.
I don’t want to make anyone feel jealous, but we went away to Cornwall for Whitsun and we had seaside fish and chips twice.
£3 small, £4 reg, and £5 large at the best chippy in this part of Surrey. Large is enough for 2-3 people. Fish is pricey, eg large cod £12.50, but it's big and full of flavour.
£3.70 for a large portion at the chippy around the corner from me but a) they're good chips and b) a large portion easily does 2 people. Small portion is £2.50 and still enough for me (and I like my food).
wow some of the prices you guys are quoting are what I paid as a student 20 years ago....
I haven#t eaten local, but I'd expect it to be £5 or 6 for just a portion of chips.
Last summer I agreed to grabbing lunch for the 2 boys at harry ramsdens on bournemouth beach. I actually asked them if they'd made a mistake with the bill!
Blimey, a small portion in my area (S.Hants) is £4.80! Large £6.
Not really related to the question but just had fish and chips at the Chatsworth Farm Shop - the most amazing light and non greasy batter, perfect triple cooked chips and a lovely mushy/garden pea combo.
£15 but it was my dad's father's day treat.
https://www.fwi.co.uk/arable/potatoes/harvest-2023-potato-yields-hit-by-dry-early-summer
the current potatoes, and why expensive. Haven't seen much for 2024, but don't expect an improvement
I don’t think I’ve ever bought a bag/box/whatever of chips…
You say that like that's a positive.
Not sure about the price but it’s years since I’ve had chippy chips that are actually cooked properly, and fish batter that isn’t so sopping with oil it gives you the shits.
5p chips and 1p pickled onion (c1973)
£2.90 regular size chips. The onion alone is 50p now 🙁
£4.40 for a portion near me,
they're not even that good so they can keep 'em at that price!
