Yup, Primal Scream just awful. Billy Eilish sounds superb though.
don’t think I’ve turned 6 on since they had Kae (nee Kate) Tempest standing in the other night. Eurghh
You should probably listen to them. Absolutely stunning lyricist. Peoples faces moves me to tears, every time I hear it.
Sounds bloody awful. Edit - took to long to type it, so to be clear, I mean primal scream! And they're getting worse!
Never really given foals much time before, but doing in and out now and they sound pretty tight 👌
Are they playing new songs? I’m not a big follower, but haven’t recognised a single tune yet. Open with a banger you flippin idiots
Lord knows. Recognizerd (but never liked) swastika eyes at the start, the rest is...challenging
You should probably listen to them. Absolutely stunning lyricist. Peoples faces moves me to tears, every time I hear it.
Just not my thing, sorry
It’s horrendous aint it?
The musicianing isn't bad at all, Bobby's always had a ropy voice.
Open with a banger you flippin idiots
Swastika Eyes is a banger from 20+ years ago, I enjoyed it.
But I know what you mean.
Open with a banger you flippin idiots
Open with ROCKS, dont make it hard for yourselves
Not sure they've got the vocal mix right, but OTOH......
edit - and that's adjusted by chorus 2
Watched bonobo who were brilliant and now onto four tet who is one of my all time favs live, shame the chem bros couldn’t make it for the festival as that would be a highlight,
Thought JAMC were decent, but then I have really strong rose tinted earbuds as far as they're concerned.
Only sampled brief bits of others. Not really interested in Billie Eilish.
For me personally, this year's line up is firmly on the meh side of interesting.
They should cancel the other headliners now, save themselves the embarrassment of trying to follow that
And that was only the Friday!
Great day of music. JAMC & Billy Eilish the highlights so far for me. Storming performances.
Primal scream all is forgiven 🙂
Will catch up with their set next week… seeing them live in a few weeks time.
Primal scream all is forgiven 🙂
I wouldn't say forgiven - I had to sit through the first half of the set. But yeah, they've pulled it round
If not quite pulled out of the fire, at least moved to the embers.
I just don’t get it, Billy Eilish, Foals then Primal Scream.
I mean WTF is anyone moaning about, incredible music, just incredible. Anyone who isn’t in awe should just keep quiet.
ThNk Christ for BBC, and 6music.
Not my sort of music, apart from primal scream in their heyday but each to their own
Dub War though! You know what time it be be be
I fancied a bit of FST Boy Slim last night but they weren’t broadcasting from the Sonic stage on iPlayer. 🙁
Apologies my last post was a bit aggressive.
Moan away people.
FWIW I always imagined the BBC paid for the rights to broadcast it, as it gives them thousands of hours of content. They also seem able to dip into the back catalogue of previous years.
Maybe aggressive but also fair. It's not like Bobby Gillespie's been a great singer ever, and there will be way more better singers at Glastonbury and also your local probably. But you go for the show, and after a slow start we got a great show.
Too many glass half empty viewers for me trying to find fault with the line up, the shows, the audience, the change in culture. There's still much to admire and fine, you're not supposed to like it all and you're entitled to comment but I refuse to believe they really think it's all shit.
Iplayer coverage seems really odd, can't find either of the Billy Eilish or Primal Scream sets. Are they restricting what they're playing back?
JaMC were great, I thought and Supergrass. Also caught St Vincent who were superb!
Was a direct hit for me https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0018lqk/glastonbury-billie-eilish
The thing about Glastonbury for me is that it opens up new music. I'll listen/watch and see what I think. Eilish was very good and I'm not a huge fan. Anyway, Record review is playing on Radio 3, and coupled with Building a Library (the bitchiest program on the radio), makes for a solid brunch soundtrack.
Thanks. Was using the TV player, assumed it'd be under "headliners"!
I quite like watching Jo Wiley’s coverage of Glasto, although the headliners this year don’t interest me much.
Radio 6 Music is great. Huey Morgan, Craig Charles, Giles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs all have good shows. Kate Tempest is dreadful, wish she’d bugger off, as can Mark Radcliffe and Ceris Matthews.
It's Kae Tempest and they are non-binary and use they/them pronouns. Not a dig, but please try to use the correct name and pronoun for them. Deadnaming is not cool.
I think it's all been pretty good so far.. a fairly decent mix. Has anyone stumbled across any Libertines coverage or were they too early/bad?
any Libertines coverage or were they too early/bad?
Heard a few of their songs on the wireless, sounded great to me.
Confidence Man put on a fantastic show as did Khruangbin. St Etienne have not aged well.
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Good
Idles. Nope. Shouty middle-class Camden vegan music
Seun Kuti & Egypt 80. Love afrobeat but didn't click for me
Saint Etienne. Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Billy Eliot. Nah
Idles. Nope. Shouty middle-class Camden vegan music
The band or the fans? The band's a bit of a mix; singer Joe used to be a plate washer in a pub kitchen. Guitarist Mark - well let's say it's a surprise, and having seen his stage act I'd be mildly concerned to encounter him IRL (I understand he keeps his hand in, doing pro-bono clinics in prisons, etc.)
Kayla1,
I find it odd to address a single person as them, they etc its a definition thing for me so cant recognise it, if im allowed that privilage.
Just be you, no need for more catorgories or labels, as it kind of defeats the point to me.
I respect Kae Tempest can make up Kae Tempests own pronouns, in return Kae Tempest can respect that i can make up my own also.
On a side note i quite like er er er er lets just say Kae.
any Libertines coverage or were they too early/bad?
Couldn't find any last night. Did you read the Guardian interview with Pete Docherty last week? Apparently he's now replaced drugs with cheese and wine and put quite a few pounds on. Something quite a few of us can relate to I'm sure 😂
Ended up sat up for hours watching stuff last night. Blossoms were good and Phoebe Bridgers
I respect Kae Tempest can make up Kae Tempests own pronouns, in return Kae Tempest can respect that i can make up my own also.
Actually I don't think you should. If Kae has made it clear they want to be know by they / them pronouns then out of courtesy you should do it. It's a very sensitive subject in the TG/non-binary community and it's up to us to learn, not just say 'it's confusing'. Sure, we all make mistakes but then we say sorry and try to not do it again.
If a new work colleague, Christopher, started and you called him Chris, and he said 'Actually I don't like Chris, please can you use my full name' is it OK to continue to call him Chris because 'you're allowed that privilege'?
On a side note i quite like er er er er lets just say Kae
You didn't make a mistake there; you knew what pronoun to use and chose not to to make a point. That's not right.
You should probably listen to them. Absolutely stunning lyricist. Peoples faces moves me to tears, every time I hear it.
It's an absolutely beautiful song. Saw her live at Gorilla when she'd just released her first album with Loyle Carner supporting. Absolutely top night! A nice mix of spoken word, songs and very angry political ranting. Whats not to like?
I couldn't give a monkeys what pronoun is preferable. Why does anyone even care?
I used Kae Not Kate as requested and Yes Chris not Christopher if requested but they them , sorry but no.
Funny my mates child is non binary and totally gets my point and we laugh about it, a brilliant person which is all that matters.
loving the mixture of styles of glastobury though old and young

My non-binary work colleague gets upset when wrong pronouns are used deliberately, it's a lack of respect in their mind. Do they just need to get a thicker skin because some people can laugh about it?
(I'm not the thread police but this is supposed to be a Glastonbury thread so I'm out now on this subject. People can go and read if they wish; I'd like them to but it's their choice)
I really wanted to like Billy Eilish - just couldn’t get with the quiet breathy voice. Accept its me that’s missing something there. Everyone seems to be saying it was a storming set. I also find her brother a bit creepy. 😀
Foals were awesome. Really enjoyed the Crowded House set for a bit of nostalgia. Pity Tim wasn't playing with them.
"Its their choice...."
Mmm wrong pronoun in my eyes..
But yes back to the performers of the festival, brilliant event

Didn't really do it for me either but my 18y.o was enjoying it, and when I turned over the Primal Scream was 'wtf is this shit?*' - diff'rent folks, diff'rent strokes. Whether you like the style or the voicing or not; a 20y.o had probably 75,000 people enthralled for 90 mins as far as I can tell, so it can't be dismissed.
I told my 18y.o; she's got 2 years to get her finger out before I disown her.
I also find her brother a bit creepy. 😀
Only a bit ?!?
* not unreasonable for a non-fan given the first half of the set, which was a bit 'challenging' tbf
Billie Eillish was very good but not really my cup of tea, but i can appreciate it as very good.
I wasnt there and have never been so wonder how it translated into such a big area if not at the front.
Billie Looked to really enjoy it tho as did the crowd so thumbs up all round
Really enjoyed the Crowded House set for a bit of nostalgia. Pity Tim wasn’t playing with them.
Enjoyed that too Bravissimo. Off to see them next week at Castlefield Bowl. Can’t wait! 😃
I enjoyed the First Aid Kit set. The cover of Boys of Summer was ace! Hope this means they’re touring again. They’re great live!
Catching up with Little Simz.
I know wassa waan, I know wassa like.. 😊👍
I wasnt there and have never been so wonder how it translated into such a big area if not at the front.
That's an interesting point for me.... I far prefer the intimate venue with sweat dripping off the ceiling and a sticky floor (maybe it's just my taste in bands as well) and I've been to a few stadium or festival performances over the years where I've been left a bit 'meh' by the experience. I've also been to several festival and stadium performances which were amazing and still stand out in my memory. I don't quite know what turns one into the other but some of it is definitely being part of the crowd that feeds the atmosphere, hence my comment about the 20 y.o captivating the big crowd. There can't be the years of stagecraft and practise of a Jagger or McCartney. What it is, IDK but she's got it, and the crowd were there to feed it.
Another example and to hark back to Primal Scream again. Same band all the way through. Same ropey vocals. For the first half the crowd seemed ambivalent. Then Come Together gets played, the crowd perk up, the band feeds off that energy and raise the crowd and it was a stormer by the end.
I've also seen it in comedy. I live in white middle class land and seeing comedy at the town's theatre - well, I just won't do it. We're too reserved, no-one wants to laugh at the dirty jokes, and just sit there tittering away. I saw the same comedian a few days later in a nearby blue collar/army town and nearly needed surgery for my ribs afterwards.
theotherjonv,
Couldnt agree more, its a strange thing, ultimatley i think we like seeing people happy and being around people enjoying themselves, being happy, that feeds through, then all off a sudden a great moment is upon you, grab it with both hands.
Some performers just have it, a band mentioned earlier one of my favourites live, Ferocious Dog just have it, pure energy. Seen them 7 or so times both as a full band and as accoustic 3 piece, just superb, the front man Ken Bonsall is a top bloke as is Dan Booth the Violin player, had the pleasure of meeting both, the back story and influence of the music is also very moving.
right, time for Skunk Anansie, my wife's friend Erika is on keyboards and backing vocals.
Watching Holly Humberstone on the John Peel stage.
I've never heard of her of course, being 48, but bless her, she's soooo nervous and keeps telling the audience this.
Anyway, she's cool and lovely. 😊

@theotherjonv Tell your wife to pass on the message that as I sit here in day 5 of isolation in the guest room (C-19), Skunk Anansie really brightened my day.
I bought the first two albums when they came out, but never got to see them.
It was good to see the energy and the passion still coming across.
Fantastic.
Now back to utter boredom for a bit. It’s like a self imposed prison sentence, but I’m still testing very positive.
PS iPlayer is describing The Jesus and Mary Chain as “feel good alt-rock”.
Feel good?
Ok.
I've never tried it myself but acquaintances who have told me that heroin makes you feel amazing!
I thought First Aid Kit were good, haven’t listened to them much the last couple of years. Will have to dig out their albums later.
I’ve never tried it myself but acquaintances who have told me that heroin makes you feel amazing!
Thereby beautifully mixing the J&M Chain write up and Skunk Anansie’s back catalogue (phonetically anyway)
So what's with all the flags. How does anyone see the band?
Or is that why they have large screens next to the stage...kind of an arm's race?
Skin and the band showing everyone how to do it. Brilliant.
Why SA didn't become huge global stars I still don't get.
have never been so wonder how it translated into such a big area if not at the front
My experience of being way back from the front in 1995 was of the sound being wafted away by the breeze. We were totally nutted anyway so happy to have a boogie at the back.
Was the girl on the phone in Noel's set really playing 5 pairs of scissors glued together?
Roll on the bucket hat songs
I thought First Aid Kit were good, haven’t listened to them much the last couple of years. Will have to dig out their albums later.
The new single is their first new music in 4 years (babies, COVID etc.)
Noel and his brother are both nobheads, but they did write some tunes. Only problem; is this a covers band now?
Skunk Anansie brilliant. Rebecca of Self Esteem absolutely smashing it. What a voice.
I’ve never heard of her of course, being 48, but bless her, she’s soooo nervous and keeps telling the audience this.
Anyway, she’s cool and lovely
Watching this now. Thanks for the recommendation, so sweet isn't she. Good songs too
Yungblud is absolutely outstanding what a performer.
The Gallaghers always were a shit cover band.
I was listening to Skunk Anansie and thinking Skin reminds me of someone.
Finally got it. Now you’re going to have to bear with me on this one.
It’s Stevie Nicks.
Both brilliant voices, musically quite different (visually very different) and I’m given to understand that Skin’s life away from the stage and studio might have been a bit more stable over the years.
However both have the ability to go from some tiny delicate little creature to a spectacular force of nature in about 2 bars.
Just wonderful.
Yungblud is absolutely outstanding what a performer.
Stole the festival. And I’d never heard of him.
Each to their own eh?
Noel's performance was a bit lacklustre, but he is good at what he does and has written some good tunes.
Yungblud just seems to be a dated rehash of some pop punk/emo crossover from the early 2000's. Bit of energy though at least.
Switched on expecting to see Sydney Youngblood. Left disappointed. Tuned in to Macca now instead.
Watched replay of bonobo, now on McCartney. His stuff isn't really my thing, but thought I'd give it a go
I haven't watched any of it, caught McCartney and it was dull, so I put the iPlayer on - The Other Stage apparently. Oh my lord. So many large buttocks wibbling around! I wouldn't know where to look if I was at a live gig like that. I think I'd enjoy Megan's rapping if she didn't shout so much.
Bottoms up! 😀
On recommendations tonight I've watched Mitski (my daughter's call; bit weird but pretty good), and First Aid Kit, and I'm indebted to those above that recommended them.
Watched a bit of Macca - sadly, no. It might be an 'I was there' for those that are there, but I'm not.
And now on MtS - that's got to chafe, surely?
Róisín Murphy saving us from whatever that was supposed to be on the Pyramid Stage. Obviously, he’s a leg end, but should be on in the afternoon… not a last on headliner on the biggest stage.
Watched a bit of Macca – sadly, no. It might be an ‘I was there’ for those that are there, but I’m not.
I was there when he coughed his false teeth out onto a piano? I watched 30 seconds and switched to something else.
Paul McCartney. That's painful to watch/listen to.
Roisin is simply amazing. What a band she's got with her.
Loving how they stretch out and layer up the tunes. So chilled, yet full of energy.

Sorry, couldn't disagree more.
I think he's done remarkably well.
That version of Blackbird was bloody marvellous.
Watched Confidence Man this afternoon having never heard of them before -
mesmerized........
I rather enjoyed Olivia Rodrigo, but don't tell anyone.
Her backing band were spot on.
I've just been reading a live feed on the Guardian website - for some reason the TV coverage has an hours delay on it, so following that you can see what's coming up.
Sounds very much that later on he really hits his straps and starts bossing it. Might be worth continuing to watch.
McCartney is well past his best, it’s embarrassing watching him these days, and it’s been that way for quite some time now.
I respect the guy for some of what he’s achieved, but I don’t understand why some people worship the ground he walks on and ignore the fact he can’t actually sing anymore..
Oh my lord. So many large buttocks wibbling around! I wouldn’t know where to look if I was at a live gig like that. I think I’d enjoy Megan’s rapping if she didn’t shout so much.

My daughter just taught me a new bit of dance move terminology, I give you ‘the slutdrop’. Everyday is a school day.
