Had a check up this morning and I need a filling and the dentist wants 85 quid off me for half hours work. Is that about the going rate or should I start ringing round to find a cheaper one?

sounds cheap compared to round here (I assume it's not amalgam).

Well NHS is £50.50 for silver filling so if your private base off that. Doesn't seem too bad to me.

IIRC, NHS pricing is tier-based depending on the level of work required. one filling or 32 fillings, it's all tier 2 at £50.50 for the course of treatment, including the checkup.
It goes up to tier 3 if you need crowns, dentures etc. Tier 1 is basically for a checkup & nothing else needed. I think

one filling or 32 fillings

if you present yourself to an NHS dentist with 40 years of dedicated neglect that means every single tooth has caries. You aren't going to get away with just paying £50.50

Was there a point when all dental work was paid for by the NHS for adults or did I just dream it. I was born in 75.

£93 for me

Have you had a filling before? I consider that pretty cheap.

1 very qualified dentist
1 dental nurse
Specialist materials
Specialist equipment and sterilisation protocols
Auxiliary staff (cleaner, receptionist etc.)
Building and running costs.

If you interested, I have a dremel and will do it for £45 but it'll be my first go.

if you had presented yourself to an NHS dentist when you were a child you would have been subjected to 'drill and fill' where the dentist got paid for every badly done filling in your mouth whether it was necessary or not as that's how they earned their salary.

FTFY! Sorry nickc.

Yes true nickc, band 2 means everything has to be done for 50.50 whether one filling or 32 fillings and root treatments. Price only goes up to band 3 if dentures crowns or lab work required

In Dundee it's about £15-20 for amalgam. £50 for white!

I've got to have a new cavity filled and another filling replaced and a crown on another tooth which is costing me £180.50 on NHS.

It's the crown that's the killer

£85 sound about right depending where you live.

1 very qualified dentist
1 dental nurse
Specialist materials
Specialist equipment and sterilisation protocols
Auxiliary staff (cleaner, receptionist etc.)
Building and running costs.

this is all true, but my dentist trades out of a small detached property in the suburbs, employs six people max. He drives a new Bently his partner a Porsche 911 turbo thing. No problem as far as I'm concerned, but compared to other small buisinesses of a similar size their doing very nicely.

Sounds like a bargain (all of the above). Here in NZ it was about $450 (£225) for my last filling. It's $150 (£75) ish just for a check-up.

I don't let them put fillings in, that's how they track your movements and use mind control to influence your behaviour...sorry wrong thread
