What's the going rate for a hair cut round your way?

My local barbers on an industrial estate near my office have put their price up from £10 to £15. Thought this was a bit of a piss take so I started shopping around. Turns out it's still by far the cheapest, if i go to the high street i'm looking at £25 for a regular hair cut!

Combined with the rampant kebab inflation i've been witnessing round here (£12 for a large donner!) i'm feeling the pinch!

Going rate for a gents haircut round here is £10 at the barbers but that involves just trapping up and waiting in a queue which can take an hour at the weekend.
I get mine cut at the local ladies hairdressers by appointment on a Thursday night. Costs £15 but I get a beer or a coffee while I get my haircut and I can be in and out in 15 mins. Much more convenient.

Shameless plug - anyone in the Alfreton area can go and get their barnet cut by Mrs STR @ King Street Barbers on a Monday, Tuesday, Friday or Saturday for £6 😉

I pay between £5 - £10 depending where I go.
Bearing in mind I don't have what you'd call a fashionable hair cut - literally just a shirt back & sides and a bit off the top please....
The £5 local is just for a straight forward cut and the £10 Turkish place by work usually includes wash/dry and some coffee...

Although at the barber in the block where I work a straight forward cut is £25.....

£9 at my local barber but that is cheap I think, does a reasonable job and is pretty quick so you don't end up waiting too long. Frankly, there's not as much to cut up there as there used to be anyway...!

I think £15 is the going rate round here (Stourbridge).

Combined with the rampant kebab inflation i’ve been witnessing round here (£12 for a large donner!) i’m feeling the pinch!

£13 (three chairs and a barber, Reading) , quality varies depending which person you get.

Kebab van over the road is both the nicest grilled chicken kebab in Reading and the portions are enormous (and then piled high with loads of crunchy salad, not just a few limp bits of lettuce). A small kebab and chips is satisfying, the medium is uncomfortably filling, I've not dared order the large or XL! £5.50 for a medium Donner, £6.50 for chicken.

Bearing in mind I don’t have what you’d call a fashionable hair cut – literally just a shirt back & sides and a bit off the top please….

Shirt (off your back) and sides?

When the place I go to started up, it was £9 - that must be 6 or 7 years ago.
It's now £16 or £18. I remember wheezing slightly the last time she rang the amount up on the till.

The place next door is £9.50, but it's a traditional barbers where you turn up & queue. The one I go to sorts out appointments, so it's worth spending a bit more to not waste a chunk of Saturday morning sitting & reading 6 month old car magazines while waiting to have your hair cut.

Given my rapidly expanding baldness though, I keep debating whether to buy some clippers & have done with it - grade2 all over once a fortnight & put the money I'm saving into a bike parts fund...

Two local barbers near me, both charge 9 quid, plus an extra quid if you want your beard tidied. I also give a one pound tip.
One of them I like in particular: it's like a community centre.

!2 pounds for a kebab! That's getting towards sit down meal prices.

Norwich, £17 for a medium-s****y gaff.

However...

The Turkish barber does a great cut for £10. That includes an awkward massage, waving a flame around your ears and a sprinkle of lime juice.

£5 for to be clipped.
I bought some clippers but only used them twice then went back to help keep the lass in a job. Support your local and all that. Plus it’s nice to chat to someone.

the price I pay for a hair cut is the sparkling wit and repartee of my wife pretending to be a barber

she doesn't understand (still!) the only thing you should hear in a barbers are the clippers or scissors.

I'm with Colin. Not paid for a haircut in over 30 years. My personal routine is every 6-8 weeks to run the clippers all over my mop on a grade 3 comb and then get Mrs WF to tidy up around the edges and check I haven't missed a bit.

£7.50 but that's a swift 3 on top 2 round the sides.
More shocked by breadcrumb 'Kebab about £6.50' but then it has been many years since I woke up to find a Kebab in my pocket.

No idea about haircuts, the last one I had I paid for my girlfriend at the same time and it was just shy of three figures.

According to the menus I have in a drawer, the local going rate for a large doner kebab is about four quid.

Also bought clippers many years ago but paid with my dignity on the last cut. Clippers were dying, did my usual cut the night before then catch-all run over in the morning pre-shower. Someone spotted a huge missed bit at work and I'm still getting called tufty!!

My hair gets cut by a principle stylist and it costs me £36, I get properly pampered, there’s food and drink if I want it, a nice wash and shampoo followed by a 10 minute head massage. Some things are worth taking time over, an hour or so in a salon is one of them.

Last time I went was probably 15 years ago and I think it was £5.

I don't go to barbers for 2 reasons
- I can cut it myself (and not just clippers all over)
- I don't like talking about what holiday I am going on this year

£10 at mine, was £9 but I always gave them a tenner then refused the change. Was a bit of a shock when the price went up after 8 years!

They're good and I rarely have to wait more than 20 mins to be seen, would happily pay around £15 for their service.

£9 but give her £10 as I don't need to tell her what I want, my head is like an actionman doll, 2 back and sides with a chop off the top
Maybe I'm fussy but some barbers are bowf, maybe too scared to cut enough off. One or two are really quick and competent but not many

Used to pay £25 twice a year at a salon owned by someone i knew (sort of a mate) but last time i was in for a cut (before previous election) we got onto politics and he professed a liking for Nigel Farage as in "he talks a lot of sense, i can see where he comes from - i'm voting brexit" (he's originally from manchester but moved up to scotland years ago). I walked out and bought a set of clippers for £20 and now i'm quite happy to have a grade 1 all over.

£11 usually, the barber asked last time if I qualified for the OAP rate of £7.50.

I'm 54, I was quite pissed off about it.

My local trendy barbers has a queue outside the door at 8.30am.... it doesn't open until 9am.

I sat in there and worked out the four barbers on duty were averaging 5 cuts each per hour at £15 a go. It doesn't take a genius to work out that the turnover is well over £250k ! for cutting hair! No wonder barbers shops are springing up all over the place. In the last few years our town has gone from 2, to 8 (that I can think of)

years ago I got my hair cut in indonesia and they tried to arrange for me to go for a date with their daughter while I was there... the prevalence of cut-throat razors made me decline the offer!

Nowadays I do it myself, grade 4 round the back and side, grade 5 on top - noones openly laughed at me yet

Mine is just under £20 but the Barber comes to me. I've been doing this for two years and she cut my hair at the trendy place in town for a few years beforehand - which is now £30 a go (as good as they are that would annoy me).

£8 for the Turkish lads who opened up in Whitefield not so long ago - in the middle of Manchester there are still barbers around the £10 mark if you hunt (a cut in time in the NQ is still doing £9 cuts)

£20 at my vegan barber shop in Exeter. It's quite hip in a good way so I get to feel down with the kidz. It's also the only cut that I've ever had compliments on.

£4 at my local barbers but they don't call him 'Bodger Baz' for nothing.

I usually go a Turkish barbers near work nowadays. Costs £9 but this includes a de-fuzzing of the ears, back of the neck etc and a lovely lemon scented head spray when they have finished.

£12 + £1 tip

I would be much more interested in hearing about the tip side of things. I usually give a quid on top, but no idea if that's acceptable to be honest. I do sometimes wonder if a quid is more insulting than giving nothing!

Nah. I mean I'm 50p classier for sure, but it's just a little bit of a round up. I got a long way through adult life before I found out about and got comfortable with tipping for a haircut.

Went to someone in Bath since 1979, my then g/f went to her, but I would just pitch up on the off-chance when I happened to be in the city. Lately her opening hours had become a bit unpredictable, which coincided with a bloke opening a barber shop in a little place next to a chippy down the road, which I walk past on a Saturday on my way into town, so very handy.
He charges £10 and does a pretty good job, where I used to go was £10, then £15, so I’m £5 up and I don’t have to drive to Bath. 😁

Nowt my missus is a hair stylist ( now mobile ) ..I'm always last in the queue mind so not exactly a great advert as it's always way overdue ..it actually boils my piss at the pittance she charges blokes for their haircuts (£5) who never ever leave a tip ..and even women who get charged at least half what they would pay on the high street..for a lesser job .
But having wasted my breath countless times telling her to up her prices .. I've given up ..
She really should just register as charity ..

What I really love is that there can't be any questions left that haven't been asked before on here:

I'm even more worried that I can't remember what happened last weekend but I can remember that the price of haircuts has been discussed here before

I changed barber recently as the one near home was taking over an hour at the weekend and I'd rather do something better with my time. So tried a couple in town, one cut one of my moles, he then said "I don't usually cut people", well thanks for making an exception, never went back. Tried another and he went on about how much he had to work to avoid income tax, hated him, never went back.

There's a smallish chain near work to city centre which are pricey, i.e. £21 a go, but short queue time and inspite of the neck tatt's and ladishness they seem to be ok. For me the price isn't as important as the speed and convenience!

Retro where are you based to be paying £13 for a large donner? Chicken or Lamb shish must be £15 upwards!

My last few haircuts have been free cos I gave the barber some trim of my car I was scrapping, otherwise I pay him a fiver, sometimes it shows...

£11 for just a haircut at the local Turkish barber in Littlehampton, £22 for shave and beard trim as well. That includes hot towel, lemon/mentholy face balm, eyebrow trim and ear fire(the last two were not needed in my younger days). Unusually chuck him £25 and walk out feeling fresh.

£8.50 so pay a tenner. He works on his own in a small parade of shops, he says that the turnover he has is enough but no need for a second person.

There's a lot of Turkish barbers opened up on the high street, one seems to be favoured by local celebs and footballers, his instagram videos all look very dramatic with over the shoulder and head massages.

£15 for the local village barber, £30 in London if I pop out at lunch. That gets a wash too, which is a gloriously relaxing thing.

Only time I ever use cash too, as no barber shop ever seems to take cards. Not at all suspicious...

I just have to ask Mrs SR nicely when she has 20 minutes. She has been cutting my hair for years.

That said, there is a mobile barber that often parks up close to our house who charges £8 per cut.

We're in Cardiff.

Most of the 'Turkish' barbers around Matlock/ Bakewell way are about a tenner. They sort the rogue hair from the nose, ear and eyebrows out, and as an old squaddie the one style they deliver is good for me.
