Inspired by the shoes thread I'm interested in how many jackets people own. Mrs JeffL always takes the pee out of how many I own, but in my mind it's perfectly normal, seeing as I venture out and do outdoor activities. I'm ignoring suit jackets as those were for work and get used very rarely now.

I have 9 in total

1 x Decathlon waterproof hardshell type thing

1 x Montane Prism that gets used pretty much every day from September to April for dog walking and general handiness

1 x Montane buffalo jacket style copy for proper cold horrid weather

1 x Howie's windproof for the bike

1 x Howie's waterproof for the bike

1 x Aldi softshell for the bike

1 x big puffer style jacket that Mrs JeffL bought me as a gift

1 x old decathlon down jacket in the car for emergencies

1 x woolen peacoat style jacket if I'm feeling smart

I think compared to most on here I'll have a pretty low number.

It's something that needs to be addressed in our house. If you add in the kids old jackets we probably have 40 plus. And we do pass on plenty of the kids old clothes, just not for a wee while.

My son has 5 jackets straight off, one for football, two for cycling, one for summer and one for winter.

I like to keep my old insulated jackets for camping, gardening and stashed in the boot for emergency use.

I have 4 that I regularly use for cycling, and that's excluding the thicker, winter long sleeve jerseys which are essentially a jacket.

Time for another big clear out, I recently went though my cycle clothes and filled two black bags of ripped, or heavily worn cycle clothes that weren't used in years.

Not sure where to start with this.....

I've got shit loads, my missus always take the piss when I say I need a new jacket.

about 8 bike jackets, 3 or 4 outdoor/walking jackets, 3 or 4 puffers, couple of softshells, 2 snowboard jackets, few casual jackets, then theres insulated shirt type jackets and gillets....

Then about 4 or 5 work jackets/hi viz. I'm gonna about 30...

It seems I am just about 1:1 with shoes!!

Edit: actually I might be over doing it, as some over lap so maybe only 25. I think I need a clear out...

Seems to be a pattern here..... Also have a SWMBO who comments on my collection of jackets.

Thing is, you buy a decent jacket and it doesn't fall apart so they last. If you have multiple then the wear is shared.

But I've heard "oh, another softshell that looks identical to the other softshells you have"

Lol, far too many.

Many years ago, I went to a clothing sample sale and got two identical cycling jackets: one in yellow for commuting and one in red for MTB. I've still got them and use them occasionally.

At another sample sale about 18 months ago, I bought another two (different this time, one of which I've worn once).

I've got two down jackets plus two (synthetic) padded gillets but that didn't stop me buying another lightish down jacket about a month ago (though this one does have a hood...)

And I bought a new (long) waterproof coat for walking the dog yesterday....

I've got an old Sprayway Goretex jackets which must be at least 30 years old but is only used for dirty  "labouring" activities and I've got an old RaceFace Aquanot jacket which must be 25 years old and I don't think I've used for probably 15 years.

The above accounts for approximately a third of my coats/jackets.

I don't deliberately hoard but I have an aversion to waste so don't like to chuck out anything I might use in the "near future"....

None anymore but I probably had around 10 at one point……all of them bike jackets, my bro got most of them and wears them to his work (roofer) and for dog walks, my mum got my Rapha waterproof bike jacket and my Alpkit waterproof.

Blimey you lot.

One waterproof yellow for bike commuting and MTB

One waterproof for everyday, a heavy duty waterproof for winter that was a hand-me-down, an alpkit insulation midweight, a tweed jacket for smart and a long black wool. That's it.

Too many to count as they are scattered over the house but at a guess at least 20 to 25 (biking and walking jackets) may be more...

Loads. Technically not a jacket, but I love gilets. Find them very useful and complement a jacket nicely too. I list out insulated vests/gilets only (i.e. excluding windproof only ones)

  • OMM rotor vest - used for biking/walking. Great warmth for the weight
  • Rab strata vest - leave it in the van, along with other spare kit (insulated jacket, waterproof jacket, windproof jackets, hats/buff/gloves - kept for the whole family)
  • PHD hooded down vest - winter trips
  • Adidas terrex gilet - boot camp, gets muddy
  • Honda BSB synthetic vest- everyday wear
  • Cotopaxi down vest - everyday wear, but generally only if it's dry
  • RAB VR flex vest - active use (usually walking)
  • Rapha brevet insulated gilet - cycling
  • Dickies sherpa vest - mostly gets used for chores and in the garage/workshop.
  • North face thermoball gilet - doesn't really get much use these days. Leave it in the office if it's chilly
  • Keela made exo2 heated motorcycle gilet. Fair weather rider now these days

I feel like I've missed a couple. Mostly synthetic vests as I find them generally more use in UK conditions. I still have my eye on more...

Strangely enjoyable exercise to think about which ones I have 🙂

Ah cool, another list thread where I can reaffirm my hoarding tendancies.

Outdoorsy:

Rab Goretex "nice" shell

Haglofs "beaten up" shell

Endura MT500 MTB jacket

Rab windproof

2 x Softshells - 1 Alpkit, 1 Rab

Montane synthetic belay jacket

Mountain equipment big down jacket

Terrex running jacket

Roadie waterproof x 2

Roadie windproof x 1

Casual:

Finisterre puffy jacket (yellow - barely wear it)

Passenger Puffy jacket (black - wear loads)

Black denim jacket

Smart-ish wool coat

Baseball jacket I got from a vintage shop

And I think about 10 "shackets" in various styles for that Americana lumberjack look I try and cultivate for some reason.

2x Paramo (1 lightweight for summer rain and wind, one bigger and heavier for winter).

1x Buffalo

3x cycling waterproof ones  (roadie one, mtb one, and a larger one for when I'm, ahem... 'timbered up'

1x mega stretchy Innov8 one I use for fells runs / when mandated to be carried in tri or run races.

1x Alpkit down jacket for when it's really baltic.

1x packable thin down Rab jacket for bikepacking evenings around the camp-bike.

Then 2x work-provided working ones - Orange waterproof if out working, + 1 softshell.

Living on the west coast of Scotland, more waterproof jackets than days in the week, then adding in cycling, running and kayaking and before we start looking at soft shells and insulation in both down, synthetic, fleece etc. plus there’s a big box in the garage that contains a few more as well plus a DJ tucked away somewhere, so probably 30, going on 40

If we’re including coats:

1 x waterproof/wind proof etc bike jacket. Also used off bike.

1 x denim chore coat

1 x leather jacket

1 x long wool coat

1 x short coat

I only really wear the bike and denim ones with any real frequency. Just run too hot as a rule so prefer an over shirt
