27 since '98, just wrote down the list:

Micra 1.0GL (lovely tin can of freedom)
Fiesta XR2 (broke down a lot)
Escort 1.6 Ghia (dull)
Escort RS Turbo S2 (better as a dream)
Mondeo ST24 (fine for getting up and down the motorway)
Escort Cosworth Lux ( a dream realised, still miss it)
Focus 2.0 Zetec (loved it)
Focus RS (adored it, hated Halfords interior)
Golf GTI Mk4 (truly woeful)
Elise S1 (loved it)
Elise S1 Sport 160 (loved it more, engine had so much character)
Focus Mk1 (go to everyday car)
M3 (E46) (wonderful)
911 Carrera (996) (great until you try and get anyone in the back)
Exige S1 (VHPD) (loved it, should have never of sold)
M3 CSL (wonderful)
Exige S1 (Supercharged K20a) (converted myself it was a work of art by the end)
Exige S S2 (my baby)
M3 (e92) (good, but getting a bit too big)
V8 Vantage (loved the idea, reality was different)
Z4M (didn’t know what it wanted to be, but loved the engine)
Focus ST ( stop gap car I fell in love with despite being chavy)
C250d (a symbolisation of everything that can be wrong with a modern car, pure style over ability)
330D (F30) (loved it, best real world car I ever had)
335D (F30) (lovely power handling ruined by 4WD and drove like an Audi, was glad to get rid of it)
330D (F30) (as per first one)
430D GC (better than the three, more usable)

Doesn't include other half cars, those are all mine but I have normally run a fun car and a normal car for everyday for me for the last 15 years or so. So day to day I have been driving a focus or golf most of the time with a fun car in the garage which get changed more frequently, normally changed at a point when I won't loose money or have crept in value slightly so it doesn't cost as much as some think. And 4 of them have been company cars

I know enjoying cars is frowned upon on here and I accept every time I have enjoyed getting in a car, a baby or kitten has died a horrible death somewhere...

5 since 2003.

- Peugeot 306 Dturbo. Got nearly 100,000 miles out of it (bought with 30,000 odd on the clock). Loved that car, not just 'cos it was my first.
- Skoda Octavia Estate 1.9TDi 4x4. Nearly got to 200,000 miles (bought ex-demo).
- VW California 180PS. Traded in after a year and a bit with 15,000 miles on it, for not much less than it cost.
- Skoda Octavia Scout 2.0Tdi 4x4. Bought to replace the estate that died.
- VW California Beach 140PS. Bought as a toddler friendlier replacement for other van.

Fingers crossed there won't be any need for changes to the fleet for at least the next 5 years...

I didn't start driving until I was about 19 or 20. When I passed my test I used my Mum's car on her insurance for a bit.
Then a friends of the family gave me his old Renault 5 - what a heap of shit that turned out to be, cost me a fortune in repairs!

So:
Renault 5 (C reg)

Nissan Micra (K reg) my grandfather's old car given to me when he had to stop driving. Had very scratched bumpers and corners...

Citroen Berlingo (V reg). Finally a decent quality car that was only 3 years old capable of carrying bikes and of me sleeping in the back of it and that shouldn't be costing me thousands in garage bills each time but I had to sell it 18 months later due to financial problems.

Fiat Marea estate (R reg) Another banger that ended up costing loads in garage bills although it did at least run on veg oil!

Ford Mondeo estate (V reg) Again, a bit of a banger but very reliable. Got written off when I hit some debris on the motorway one night.

Vauxhall Vectra estate (58 reg). The old works pool car; it's 2-year lease expired a couple of months after I'd written off the Ford so I bought it direct from the lease company.
Had that for 5 years now, longest I've ever owned one car.

Cars have never been anything other than functional for me - the Mondeo and Vectra are about as boring as you get! Just pure motorway cruising big estates for carrying bikes and camping gear.

Passed my test in 2004, and since then I've had:

H reg VW Golf, 1.3 petrol
E reg Ford Sierra, 2.0 petrol
X reg Ford Focus, 1.6 petrol
N reg Land Rover Discovery, SVO commercial, 2.5 300TDi
Smart car, work vehicle
R reg Ford Escort
54 reg Hyundai Coupe, 1.6 petrol (wife's car really, and our current vehicle)
61 reg VW Caddy, work van
And as of Friday, the 61 reg Caddy has gone and been replaced with a 65 reg new model Caddy

Bookmarking this thread for when I need to answer all your "what was your first car" security questions on website logins.

I've had half a dozen I think, passed my test in 1990 or thereabouts. Mk1 Fiesta, Mk3 Escort, MkFroggy Scorpio and three Cavaliers. Oh, and a CB500 if we're including bikes.

I've spent half of my driving life in company cars though. A succession of truly dreadful normally-aspirated diesel Fiestas, an Astra when work finally caved in to the idea that the Fiestas weren't fit for purpose, a Vectra, Passat, Mondeo and the current Hyundai i40. Probably a number of others as stop-gaps at varying points too, had an A6 for a few months, and some dirty great big Merc (E-class I think).

Out of the lot, the best I've owned was probably either my first Cav (I adored that car) or the Scorpio (terrible exterior design but you don't see that when you were driving it and the interior was luxurious). Best including company cars has to be the mighty Mondeo, head and shoulders the best motor I've 'owned' for any length of time.

Since I passed my test in 1975, just the four:-

Renault 6
Sierra
Mondeo estate
Astra

So I've had way more bikes* than cars 🙂

*That's proper bikes, not those horrible noisy things with engines!

Jeez, I like cars but have only owned 2 myself since 2000.

1; a mk3 Fiesta Si 1.4 that I bought in 2000 at 4 years old with 55k miles on and sold in Sept 2006 with 144k miles on.

2; 2003 Ibiza TDi Sport, which I bought in Sept 2006 at 3 years old and 24k miles. I still have it, although now with 271k miles on....
Had it cleaned today and taken pics to sell it although not sure what I'll get for it. I want to keep it but got a wagon for baby-carting duties and figured my Wife will use that as her daily car and I will use her car, so my Ibiza is not really needed and sat on the drive not going anywhere.

Only owned two since 1993 (when I passed my test).

Vauxhaul Corsa 1.5TD scrapped after 7 years with 185k on the clock
Volkswagen Golf V6 4motion scrapped after 10 years with 120k on the clock

Then a couple of very cheap lease deals - both Kia Picantos.

Now just have a bicycle....

Me: aged 38, never passed my test, never owned a car.

Wife: aged 38, passed her test in 95ish, owned: red Fiesta, silver Fiesta, Clio, Scenic, Corolla, Scenic, Corolla Verso. So, seven cars in 20 years, though there were several car-free years in there too.

The Verso just passed 123456 miles, which was very exciting.

Although I passed my test at 18 or 19 I didn't get a car until my mid twenties.

Personal cars (i,e once I've bought myself): 1 ford, 2 VWs and 4 skodas.

Had 3 or 4 company cars (in the dim and distant past). Had a golf estate whilst I had the last 2 co cars. Jacket always felt on a shoogly nail!

Passed in 2011, shared a Ford Focus with my dad for the first year and since had:

Probably a tad excessive having a 'new' car each year!

Not owned a car younger than 12 years old in that time, and the dearest cost me a grand.

Scirocco GTi
Golf GTi 16v
Golf VR6
MR2 GTI 16
Passat V6 TDI
Honda Accord TDI Estate
Mondeo LX TDCI
Seat EXEO ST TDI

I think I started well, enough - drove the Scirocco on L-Plates and the 16v Golf was bought the day I passed my test, I should have never sold it, it was a bit rough about the edges but the body was solid and rust free, unlike the VR6 that was a pile of rusty crap and did 20mpg.

The MR2 should have been great, but mine was a pile of crap - I'm not very good at being objective buying cars, I get all excited and buy the first one I see, sold it at a big loss after 4-5 months.

The Passat was lovely, it was only a few years old when I got it and I drove it for years and years, I never went wrong once and my Dad still owns it now it was neither economical for a diesel or fast for a V6 but drove beautifully.

The Honda was a real step into the 'old man' - HUGE, massive boot, very, very comfortable, good on fuel without being too slow and had lots of stuff - sadly like almost every car I've chosen myself it was a pup and all the electrics died all the time and 3 separate auto-electricians couldn't fix it - sold for a huge loss because some scrote stole our bikes and the insurance wouldn't cover them and I wanted to replace them.

The Mondeo was a hateful, hateful steaming pile of utter, utter plastic crap - easily the most unpleasant, nasty thing I've ever had and I include phemonia. It stank of shit, drove like shit, smoked, leaked fumes into the cabin and bits fell off it all the time, useful things like the exhaust and suspension parts. My wife reminds me that it cost £1000 and I sold it for £1100 a year later (after spending £600 to MOT it) even if it was new I would hate it, it felt like it didn't care about itself, it was plastic black shoes with tracksuit bottoms in a flat roof pub. If I saw 4-5 before I bought it and it was the best of a bad bunch, thier owners didn't car either, they we're all filthy dirty wearing mismatched bald no-brand tyres and all had the same smell. Much of the hatred though I think was from the fact I had to buy it because someone stole my bikes.

The Seat is 'perfect' it drives beautifully, it's quick enough - would do 50mpg or more if I ever took the bike rack off the roof, carries my family in comfort and safety, all my riding kit and does trips to the Alps with ease, it's got the best stereo I've ever owned and it's very quiet. I'm going to try to buy it for my Wife when it's meant to go back to the lease company (company car) but after years of having to watch the pennies and thinking about mpg when I choose my next car in Autumn I'm going in going back to my roots, nothing mental but a petrol and something quick - either an A4 2.0 Quattro or a Skoda VRS estate 230 - depending how much my boss likes me at the time.

hated the Insignia and Vectras

Having driven the Vectra 1.8 SRi, I think I can safely say that it was a limousine compared to the Vectra 1.8L that preceded it. One of the few occasions where Clarkson and I were in total agreement regarding just how mind-buggeringly awful and hateful that car was to drive. Absolutely the most uncomfortable car I've ever had to spend most of a day driving, I've sat on wooden pews that were more comfortable; I used to find myself wriggling around trying to find a comfy spot thirty meters after leaving the company car park! And slow. I can't express how glad I was when it was replaced by the SRi, a decent turn of speed and Recaro seats: bliss! 😀

Driving since 1998:
Ford KA - My first car and I loved it. I could fit 2 bikes inside, it was surprisingly fun to drive particularly in the snow and it was astonishingly easy to fix if it broke down. Did over 100k in it then sold it for a...
Renault Megane - Love hate relationship. It cost me £1k within 6 months of owning it due to a electronics problem and developed lots more of these of the years. But, it did over 150k and the engine worked liked new, it's just a shame the electrics didn't.

And that's that. I took the decision to sell the Megane 18 months ago and see how I could survive without a car for a month or 2. The answer it seems is "very well indeed" and so far I have no desire at all to get another one.

Mazda Bongo camper
Skoda Octavia vRS Mk2

Datsun was bought and sold very quickly.

The Astras were great BMW worriers, probably because of how quick they were for a little 1.3 lump but also for how badly they handled and slowed down... Lots of fun in them. First one had a brilliant German lump and shocking British body (it rotted), second one had a less pokey British lump but better German bodywork.

Ah, the 205. A veritable pocket rocket. Quite a potential ditch magnet. Sold to a Jaguar employee when I came back from working overseas as he wanted to cut his B road commute time down. *sigh*

Fiesta was a Fiesta. Well built, surprisingly comfy, but not great for all the rubbish I carried around the country. It was also previously my Grandparent's, so cared for like a small child.

Focus was great. Handled well and had a boot the size of Mexico. Saved my life when Mr. Khan of Southall decided that blind bends near Slough were more fun taken on the wrong side of the road.

Octavia was great fun, but surprisingly not as much fun - or as well built - as the Focus, even if it was a lot quicker in a straight line. What really surprised me is I looked at a Mondeo ST at the same time as the Octy and it was horrible inside; all plastic and cheap. The Octy was a better buy on that front alone.

Current Octy is a workhorse. Comfy, reasonably powerful, reasonably fuel efficient but pretty grown up. To be fair, just what's needed at this point.

Mini 1000 - had to change the engine pretty much straight away, easy job though. Bought with a years MOT that must have been the dodgiest ever
Skoda Estelle 1200 - very cheap from car market, barely used when I got it. Gave it away after a year when needing MOT'd
Austin Maestro 1.3HLE - not a great car but spacious
Citroen BX1.9TRS Estate - lovely car, my Dad's ex-company car which I bought when it was 3 years old. Did 100,000+ miles no problem
Fiat Panda 1000 - Rust bucket but fun
Fiat Ulysses 1000 - First new car, decent enough
Peugout 205 GTi 1.6 - much nicer than the 1.9
Honda Civic VTi 4-door - fantastic and fast
Vauxhall Carlton 2.0 - Our first auto, my wife loved it
Vauxhall Vectra 1.8LS - bland but uk, did lots of European miles with it
Honda Accord Aerodeck - Great car, kept for 10+ years
Ford Mondeo 2.5V6 - nice to drive, terrible build quality and worse dealers
Fiat Ulysses - great load lugger, kept it for a long time
Audi A4 1.6 Auto - nice enough little car but with niggles the terrible dealer couldn't fix
Honda Jazz 1.4 Auto - Great little car, only just got rid of it recently
Honda Accord 2.0 Exec - nice car, well equipped
*Honda Jazz 1.2 - bought as a first car for my daughter but still kept as a spare run-around
Mercedes C230 Coupe - nice car and quite quick but very expensive to keep on the road
*BMW 116i - nice little car, now my daughters
*Mercedes SLK 250CDi - My wife's mid-life crisis car. Quick, fun to drive and economical
*Mazda CX-7 - the 260hp 2.3 Turbo petrol model. Drives great and well equipped but terrible fuel economy
* = still got

Might have forgotten a few. We've also had something like 15 motorbikes and two motorhomes. Current fleet includes 4 cars, 5 motorbikes and a motorhome!

Epicsteve, you're one of these elusive CX-7 owners. I've only ever seen 2 or 3 of these cars.

4 since 2001:

2001-2003 1993 Metro Rio (rusted and died)
2003-2005 1989 Golf mk 2 (had dents when I got it, best £125 I ever spent, scrapped as my mate abandoned a Rover that I put on the road which was in better condition)
2005-2008 1993 Rover 214Si (Broke the gearbox doing a massively unsympathetic bump start after the coil got broken cos a bus had hit it and I never noticed til a very wet very long journey.)
2008-2013 2001 Mondeo ST200. Sold in working order, had stopped being able to get parts easily for it when Arnold Clarke took on the Ford parts in Scotland.
2013 on - brand new Skoda Octavia (1.2TSI woo!).

I think the first one I saw was the one I bought. It's a great car but the 20mpg or so fuel consumption would put a lot of people off.

Triumph Herald (the chicks digged the retro style at university)
Austin Metro (stereo got stolen which wiped its value down to £0)
Fiat Punto
Fiat Punto GT (turbo-lag, torque steering monster)
Honda Prelude
Golf GTI
Honda S2000 (ate rear tyres)
Saab 9-3 Aero
Golf GTI
BMW 320D M Sport estate (kids arrived)
Honda CRV (currently on our fifth)*
Honda Jazz (had 3)*
Honda Civic Sport (current - and best car I have ever driven)*

*wife works for Honda - we get 2 new ones every 10 months or 10k

Had a few motorbikes too:
Honda CBF125, Hornet, CBR600

Not as many as I had thought. Lost the car love a while ago but now beginning to want something properly quick. Albeit sort of stuck with Honda - so maybe a Civic Type R.

You can plainly see the point in simonjj's life at which kids came along and his car choices went downhill with it 😀

He'll be one of they many Golf GTD owners that drive like an idiot to try and prove to themselves that buying a diesel doesn't make them old...

Austin Metro
Austin Metro
Austin Maxi (cost me £50 and used to transport mates to clubs)
VW Beetle (should never of sold it)
VW Type 25 Camper
VW Golf MK.2 16V (miss this one)
VW Scirocco GTi MK.2
VW Golf Tdi Mk.4
Ford Escort (the worst one even compared to the Metros)
VW Passat
Citroen C5
Ford Focus (the most reliable)
VW Touran
Audi A4

I thought it would be more than this, but I do tend to hang on to my motors if I like them... the Escort lasted 4 months it was atrocious.

cardo - I'm really struggling to understand why, having owned one Metro, you got another one.

Not quite the worst car I've driven (Allegro was the winner there, even over old style Lada's and the like) but still a contender.

@epicsteve... the first one dissolved one Winter, I was 17/18 and insurance was sky high.. The 2nd Metro was an MG Metro (woo hoo) and was mint and didn't rust amazingly!!

Don't quite know the best response for you "epicsteve" but seeing as you obviously don't know me maybe you'd be better off keeping you sweeping statements to yourself.

driving since 1995. many company cars and I like the faster ones.. stages where I had a company car but we also owned one at home which was "fun"

Ford Orion 1.6 Ghia Diesel - first car, rust bucket, slow but full of toys!
Ford Fiesta 1.0, changed engine for a 1.3 with webber carbs, alloys and lowering springs
Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia in Brown!- basically an xr3i with a boot, loved it!
Ford Orion 1.6 Automatic- horrific pile of poop I had to get when the engine in the Orion went pop, ditched soon after..
Mk3 RS 1600i Escort. What a car, stolen and trashed 🙁 worth £££ if I had it now
Mini 1.3 British Open Classic -what a car! (mate still has it in his garage)
Ford Ka Collection (this is where it all went wrong) first new car, bought to drive nearly 100 miles a day
Some random 206 - first company car, elephant bum dashboard is all I can remember
Polo 1.9 GTD - first nice company car
MG ZR - modified beyond belief, lowered, full stainless engine bay etc.
Renaultsport Clio 172 Phase 2 best car I owned bar the RS
Toyota Avensis ts- next company car, big, comfy, not at all sporty..
Totyta celica 1.7vvti lovely but very plasticcy
Audi S3 Quattro - best company car ever, but 20mpg...
Mr2 Roadster - great car, but a truck nearly wrote it off(then Mrs Muz did it properly in the snow)
Scirocco Diesel - looked so good but really uncomfy -co car
Audi A3 Quattro Diesel, in STW favourite White with black roof... co car
Lexus is 300h F sport, present car, wonderful, smooth, fast, efficient (hybrid) cheap to run and tax etc. co car and again in white to please the STW massive
Mazda 3 Sport current Mrs Muz car that I pay for...

It was supposed to be a joke, but if you resemble the remark...

I drive my wife's SLK like an idiot at times to try and prove buying her the diesel was a better option than the 300 petrol. It can be fun as I think everyone expects the diesel to be slow!

You can plainly see the point in simonjj's life at which kids came along and his car choices went downhill with it

And also the occasional one where you can tell when the kids were grown up.

We had years of people carriers and estates but are thankfully well past that now!
