My father, at 74, is in a reflective mood. This week he wrote down all the cars he owned since passing a test in 1964, all just daily drivers, no collectors items...

30 cars
Three camper vans
1 motorbike
1moped

I thought 'bonkers number of cars' - until I worked out that we have had 10 since 1996....mainly as we have had two cars for the last 10 years.. 😕

How many have you had?

Since 1991... 3 cars 7 vans. Two of those vans I only kept for a year each. Tend to keep stuff for a while. The last van I sold I'd had for 8 years.

My father owns one car in his entire life a 1967 VW Beetle bought 2nd hand from my aunt. Still have it.

Me, this is my first fully paid and own by me - 2005 Toyota Corolla bought 2nd hand. Previously I had a 650cc Daihatsu that I bought 2nd hand on hired purchase that I sold off before I even paid full for it.

The answer: One.

Since I passed my test in 1979 -

Fiat 127 903cc crashed and scrapped
Mini Clubman scrapped after rear suspension came through boot floor after giving it some air. .
Vauxhall Chevette 1.3 bought for buttons. Overpaid! Scrapped
Vauxhall Astra 1.3 Did the job as cheap family car.
Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8 Likewise
Ford Mondeo 2002 1.8 Likewise.
Skoda Octavia 2012 1.4Tsi Same size as prev Mondeo (slightly wider boot). 1/3 more MPG. Smaller road tax. Noisy until tyre change. So far so good.

Yamaha 125
Honda 90
Honda 250
Honda 400 After my 400 was stolen I decided that I would go with a car for weekending duties and 24/7 usability and before I had a serious bike crash. Almost everyone has one eventually.

PS I therefore claim the prize for the most boring car list!

1988 2Cv. (ex dad- free)
1994 Morris Ital (ex dad - should have been free)
1998 Mondeo saloon (ex dad - cheapish)
2005 Peugeot partner (my money)
Shocking track record of dire cheap "character building" cars. I did raise a pint when 2Cv died.

I find it interesting and quaintly amusing that despite the OP asking 'How many...'

In typical STW, majority of responders have interpreted that to mean'What..' 😀

Please. Do continue.

Approximately 21-ish

9 here since 1996. Last one will shortly have done 8 years in our ownership.

I keep contemplating changing it and came within a gnats whisker of buying something over the last month but then I think about what else I could spend £300 a month on and give that idea up.

AX GTi - approx 3½ years, sold.
Honda Prelude 2.2 Si VTEC - approx 4 years, broke for parts.
Peugeot 106 1.5D - one year, got me out of debt.

2 in 20 years. Mini Cooper*, then Smart Forfour.

*A proper Mini, not a SUV with a Mini sticker on it.

Honda MT5
Suzuki AP50

Passed test in 83

Renault 5
Austin Allegro
Mk3 Cortina
Mk2 Escort Linnet
Mk2 Granada 2.3
Mk3 Escort 1.6 Ghia
Mk2 Granada 2.8 Ghia
Mk2 Cavalier SRi
Sierra 1.8 Ghia
Mk3 Cavalier SRi

Then kids came along, money got tighter and function became more important than style!

Citroen BX
Mk2 Mondeo
Citroen Xantia
Galaxy 2.3 (3 kids by this time)
Another Xantia (I had a genuine affection for these things and if wasn't for the fact that replacing hydraulic lines are more than the car's worth I'd probably still have one)
Mk3 Mondeo (current family car)
Transit Connect
Fiat Doblo (current commuter/bike hauler)

The one that got away - before we were married the wife and I used to babysit for a couple the wife of which had a Mk1 1.3 Escort Sport. Metallic purple, quarter bumpers, bucket seats etc. I coveted that car and made the husband promise to give me first refusal if they ever sold it. Hadn't seen them for a while and asked after the car, to be told the wife had hit a dog and he'd sold it for virtual scrap because he'd thought I wouldn't want it. It had only needed a new valance and wing, I could've killed him!

Sorry over thirty cars and motor bikes by thirty and stopped counting. Sprog James, just twenty is on his tenth car/bike and my old man was the same. Lots of turn over but a few long term keepers had my Midget for sixteen years and now my biz partner has it a few years and it may return home soon, faithful Vito van 5-6 years (bought off here!). Petrolheads here, well anything mechanical that moves!

Ps some ace collections here...

Since 1994

Mini
3 x Citroen Saxo VTR (no, no massive sound system or bean can exhaust)
Citroen ZX
Mazda MX-5
Mazda 3

Oh also registered keeper of a couple of Mrs North's:

(New) Mini Clubman Cooper
(New) Mini Convertible Cooper S

Used to love cars and driving when younger, then fell out of love with it/them - just cycled everywhere. Now about to turn 40 and heading into mid life crisis territory and need to start owning some interesting cars.

I surprised myself, but since 1990, I have had 14 cars.

I suppose the real measure (to level the playing field), is the average cars per year , so divide total number of cars by number of years since you passed your test , which takes me to 0.54 cars per year.

In order :-

-talbot samba rallye
-peugeot 405
-Renault clio
-Peugeot 306
-MGF
-Lotus Elise
-TVR Cerbera 4.2
-Caterham 7 (still got this one)
-Fiat Coupe 20V turbo
-Honda S2000
-Audi S3
-Honda Civic Type R - FN2 (still got this one)
-BMW M3 (E92)
-BMW M135i (still got this one)

Passed test 1982. Became 2 car family with acquisition of Saab.

2CV6 Charleston - cheap car to fit large student
Citroen Visa
Citroen AXGT 1.4 - go kart
Citroen AXGT 1.4 - as above
Citroen ZX 1.4 - sensible 3 door
Saab 9000 2.0lpt - lost in flood in Cambridge sob
Citroen ZX 1.9TD - driven until worth 300ukp
Subaru Legacy 2.0 petrol - driven until scrappage scheme
Skoda Fabia VRS 1.9Tdi - Current
Skoda Octavia 1.8Tsi 4x4 - great car dodgy audi engine
Skoda Octavia Scout - Current

So 11 in 34 years (0.32 cars per year). Tend to drive them until they start to get unreliable so the Subaru, Saab and the ZXs were all 8-10 years old when they went. The VRS we have had from new and is 11 years old this year.

2001- New Focus 1.6 Zetec.
2004- New Focus 1.8 tdci Zetec.

Had that for 6 months, split up with the girl I lived with so sold it to Mum as a cost cutting measure and got:

You know that every now and then we have 'brand loyalty' threads? well I think my Dad wins on the commitment to a brand.

On starting his first proper job in 1972, aged 20, he was given the keys to a Ford Cortina company car. after that he had a new Ford (cortinas, sierras and mondeos) every 3 years, until he retired, aged 62. (i should say, he had a choice in what car he had, not just get what he was given) What did he buy as his first, non company car? A Focus.
