I've never bought spirits to drink at home, because I've always been a bit scared that my addictive personality will take control and I'd end up drinking far too much. I had a bottle of The Kraken rum for Christmas and I've got a tiny bit left. I've enjoyed it but haven't felt I've drank to excess. But will I miss it when it's gone?
What level of home spirit drinking do you accept for yourself?
A bottle of vodka at Christmas if somebody buys me one. Never buy it myself though.
I've never bought a single bottle of spirits in my life. I doubt I've consumed more than a couple of litres in my life either.
Probably 15-20 bottles of gin a year. But g'n't is all I drink, and a bottle every couple of weeks is well under the recommended units.
Two.
One at Christmas, one on my birthday in May.
Probably 3-4 bottles of whisky and 2 bottles of gin.
None usually. But we did dry January this year, so didn't buy any booze. That wiped us out of various bottles of spirit we accumulated over the years...
Depends?……i've drunk 2 nice bottles of malt whisky after getting them for xmas presents (aberlour a'bunadh, Glenfiddich Rich Oak) and got a Balvenie port wood for my birthday in January which is now almost finished, some nights i don't bother and other nights i'll have a couple of glasses but these are home measures so probably a two finger shot in my Highland Park tulip glass wi a touch of water at a time so a bottle can disappear at an alarming rate, especially if friends are round - i can't remember the last time i felt drunk or inebriated so my level of home drinking is not something i will worry about.
None.
Jim Bean in a bar but not at home.
A bottle of gin over Christmas.
Most of my whisky consumption is done outside while camping/bivvying, so "at home"? - negligible 🙂
Sadly I find that putting a bottle of whisky or brandy in front of me is like feeding a donkey strawberries. So I limit myself to one of each at Christmas and can't have any in the house other than that.
Maybe 4 which was at one time about a weekends worth so I'm happy with that.
I/we were getting through a bottle of vodka a week for years , now only a bottle a month .
Zero.
Beer on the other hand.....
5 or 6 I reckon, an even mix of gin and rum. There's also a few bottle of Port but that's wine so doesn't count...
Don't people have liquor cabinets anymore?
Where does all the Advocaat go? 😀
So far this year I think I've bought 1 bottle of Sloe Gin and 1 bottle of Coffee Liquor. The Sloe Gin is untouched (so far) and the Coffee Liquor is half gone.
RM.
edit: and a bottle of rum, of which there is a fairly hefty dent in. 😳
maybe one bottle of gin a year....
Not many. I opened a 1.5l bottle of Morgan's NYE, there's a little bit left.
Bought a bottle of Jim Beam the other week, had a couple of glasses from it.
Guess at no more than 6 a year.
A litre of vodka a week for a long time until late last year. I haven't bought hardly any booze this year so far. I'm quite pleased with myself.
Very rarely drink spirits, have some nice whiskey that I've had for 5 years have a bit on special occasions
Also got some Mezcal , gin, vodka etc
Ultimately my kids have no respect for my hangovers, so it's not worth it
At home..... two or three max. On holiday (boat) a bottle of gin lasts 2-3 days max (that is for 4 of us though).
Me none,
Mrs ws perhaps 2 bottles of blue label vodka at the very most.
Drink two bottles a year roughly, but I buy four to six bottles of Whiskey a year.
If you include bottles that I get giving then it tops up to over twenty a year!
Just finished off a very nice Japanese blended tonight 😉
Probably 3-4 bottles of Whisky and 1, possibly 2 bottles of Gin over a year.
back to hell, whence it cameWhere does all the Advocaat go?
1 bottle of malt which i get for a xmas gift, see's me from xmas to the following xmas.
1 bottle of xmas malt and I will probably consume the equivalent of another bottle of JD socially over the course of a year.
About 1/4 of a bottle at the most, like neat spirits and have various Armagnac, cognac, rum, grappa and calvados but it takes me ages to get through them as I just have a small glass now and again.
Not as bad as my folks though, they must have £1500 of booze sitting there that they rarely touch, all duty free and gifts from people. It's there 'in case somebody comes round and wants a drink'
Probably 12 bottles of single malt per year and three bottles of rum.
Also quite like a few pints of beer now and then.
I seem to be at the extreme end of the spectrum here.
2 maybe 3 bottles of hendricks
Plenty of whiskey too but this goes down a lot slower
Me and the Mrs get a bottle at the weekend which she drinks a bit more of than me, and a few beers.
She will probably do another bottle through the week but I dont touch that.
For the uninitiated...
Maybe a dozen...?
We can do 1.5L in a sitting if we're getting our rum on.. Summer is worst
I used to do two or three a week at peak times before the kids came along.. Glad those days are over
2. We're ex-pats but come home for British summer time (5 weeks or so). Buy a couple of bottles of something on the way back here.
Southern Comfort and Tanquery this year.
I was wondering recently if I have an addictive personality or more a creature of habit. I think the latter.
I was drinking a couple of 600ml bottles of beer every night and a night off was quite few and far between. One with tea and one once the boys were in bed.
Then work got pretty hectic; 12+ hours a day - well into the evening. I realised I hadn't touched a drop for nearly a month. No conscious decision, just needed to I guess. I smoked heavily for nearly a decade. Just stopped one Christmas eve and besides on slip up years later, didn't have any problems. Smoked weed (etc, etc) plenty at uni and as a bar manager where it fitted the 'lifestyle'. When I changed careers I stopped overnight and again, don't miss it.
With the spirits in the house, I'll go for a few weeks having a drink (SoCo on the rocks) nearly every evening and then just stop.
I think the issue with spirits is that home measures tend to be enormous. The bar I managed had a cocktail bar with skilled bar tenders who free-poured the spirits. When people were training up, what they thought was 25ml was often nearer 75. As well as making cocktails to spec, one of the in-house requirements was for someone to be able to pour 30 shots (25ml) out of a bottle with only 1 shot lee-way.
Depends how often I go international...
Generally pick up a good bottle of Gin and a good single malt on the way through, the last depending on who's coming around.
Last trip was a couple of bottles of Rye from the states in October half of one left so not that fast.
Probably get through 2 to 3 bottles of whisky a year
And same again for Pimms
None.
It's amazing how quickly a bottle of whisky can go without really feeling like you are drinking loads. If I've got a bottle on the go I'll usually get through it on my own in 2 weeks or so. That said, because of where we live we rarely go to the pub. If there isn't a bottle in the house I don't miss it.
I remember listening to Simon Mayo on 't radio a while back and a caller said they'd finished their Christmas bottle at the end of February. Mayo was horrified by this but I was thinking that sounded like really moderate consumption! It would only be about 3.5 units a week average.
None. For the same reason as the OP. My drinking has always been limited to session beer, which I mainly drink in pubs, and I'm weary of home drinking in general.
Espresso martinis, G&T, Cosmopolitans, homemade Limoncello and Pimms are drunk from time to time at my house. Total consumption likely to be 8-10 bottles a year I guess, could be more but I doubt it.
Probably about 12 but not 100% sure, I have 6 malts open at the moment and 3 nice gins, other bottles in the 'bar' are bottle of absolut, bottle of jack daniels, bottle of gordons or bombay gin (can't remember which), bottle of canadian club, bottle of bacardi and I think there's a bottle of cheap brandy in there too but we never touch that so it's used in cooking only. Oh and a bottle of famous grouse
I buy a small (half) bottle of own brand rum in October which mostly goes to feed the Xmas puddings I make, by about October the following year I generally need to buy another.
Never got into drinking or buying spirits really.
I have an array of single malts, no idea how many bottles I drink though - 'not a lot' really....
Spirits? None
Have never been fond of shorts If i'm going to have a drink it has to be a pint
Good topic.
Me?
Bought at Xmas for home - 5 bottles of single malt (Waitrose offers), 2 bottles of vodka, 2 bottles of gin. These were to stock up for us and family visiting/visits. I have 1 bottle of vodka and 1 single malt left.
Bought since Xmas - 1 bottle of vodka, 1 bottle of single malt.
Now most of that lot was bought for either taking to family visits over the Xmas period or visits to our place, and theres 5 of us that like whiskey. So if we're all together we'll get through 2 bottles in a night easily.
Vodka is my main tipple and I do have 1 or 2 VnT's during the week, but no beer until the weekend then only one or two over the 3 days I'm on the coast and I go to the pub for that, I don't drink beer whilst in Town.
So in the period since Xmas I'd say I've personally drank 1 bottle of whiskey and 1 1/2 bottles of Vodka. So in 12 weeks or so thats not too bad IMO. I am being honest here too, no "ohh I'd better trim that a bit, just in case I look like a drunk"
Last night though, bloody hell.. 1 very large whiskey and 1/2 a bottle of white burgundy in a restaurant and I couldn't sodding sleep very well at all..
I don't think I drink too much, I should in reality stop in the week, but for the one or two I have during the week I think thats Ok.
I like to have spirits in the house, but I don't get through much unless we have company. If I want a drink of an evening though (not terribly common these days) I'll often have a small scotch in preference to a beer.
Maybe 2 whiskey, 1 gin, 1 rum in an average year.
I'm 2 into this year. One of Monkey Shoulder and one of The Ardmore. Got some new whisky glasses off KickStarter arriving soon so will need a new bottle of something to road test them!
Probably about two. My wife pretty much never drinks spirits, I'll usually have a bottle of nice gin on the go, but probably only have one of an evening, once in a while. Usually have a bottle of vodka and one of kahlua handy too, for the odd white Russian.
On the other hand, I built myself a kegerator and usually have two or three beers on tap at any one time 8)
I'm surprised at the answers so far. Is have to say shedloads to be honest. We don't often drink in the week, but a bottle of whatever normally lasts a month or so at best. Especially bourbon, that disappears quickly. So far this year I think we're through 2 litres or vodka, two and a half 70s of bourbon a bottle of jack, 2 ameretto things and most of a bottle of spiced rum.
We don't drink huge amounts though, and in that time we've probably had 4 cans of beer and 2 bottles of wine between the two of us.
I prefer spirits to beer at home.
If it's a really messy year maybe one bottle.
I rarely used to drink and never at home up until about 18 months ago.
Then for some odd reason i fancied buying a bottle of Jack Daniels. Lovely.
It soon got to the point where i was getting through a bottle of JD every week.
When i realized i had almost finished a litre in a week at the start of February, i thought i need to reign it in a bit.
Its really easy to fall into this kind of thing.
A bottle now lasts about 3 weeks.
Me and the missus and occasional guests will probably consume two bottles of gin in G&Ts in a year.
Ale on the other hand...............
Don't people have liquor cabinets anymore?
Heck yes. This year, we've made apple and blackberry gin, rhubarb vodka, and crème de cassis. Yum!
couple of nice bottles of whisky a year perhaps
couple of half bottles of cooking whisky for hot toddies perhaps
rum for parties but that's not at my home
I was going to post similar numbers to above. Then I re-read the thread title. Ah! Per year. Hmmm! At least those numbers per week.
What about numbers for Coke & hookers? Time for another thread?
One bottle every two to three years ... 😀
About half a bottle of whisky a year.
Got loads of decent single malts but never bought one for myself. Two bottles of Bombay Sapphire a year for me and normally one bottle of Drambuie for the Mrs for over Christmas. So not a lot really. Wouldn't miss it if I couldn't drink anymore.
I have had a bottle of Ardbeg nearly there since 2008 and a barique aged grappa that I'm savouring 🙂
I also get through probably 3 a year of the less expensive stuff, but that is average of 1 or 2 max glasses a night
This is like a reverse pissing contest. I'll go and sit in the naughty corner, with an an old fashioned.
Big fat zero. I do drink a fair bit when I'm out (although I'm out much less than I once was) but feel that seeing as I live alone I'd have to essentially be an alcoholic to drink at home on my own.
****ing lightweights
If I open it I finish it in a couple of days.
So over the last year probably only 4 bottles of whisky.
Two years ago, I don't really know, the last three or four months of my job, a couple of bottles a week, plus all the bar drinking as well, prior to that, probably a bottle every week to two weeks. That was a bad year though.
Knocked that on the head when i left though.
