You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Completed a sweaty 90 min on the turbo over an hr ago, average hr was 80% of max and I topped out at 100% effort at one point (183bpm)
Checked my hr an hour later and it was still sitting at 88 (usually at this time of day it would be around 55-60).
Must say I don't usually pay any attention to these things but I thought it came down to normal in 20 min or so?
Depends how hand / long you're ridden for. Mine is often elevated by a few bpm the next am after a 100km ride.
I also find that if I go into the red, it takes longer to recover.
This is today's ride + recovery, several hours to drift back down.

NB the 23 is a duff reading!
There are about a million things that can affect your heart rate and your 'normal' might correspond to one single set of conditions. Not something to be concerned about.
Sitting in a warm house?
Had a shower?
Undies a bit tight?
Planning a Valentine sex romp?
Had your tea?
Not particularly concerned as such, more interested as it seems to come down quite quickly during exercise itself if ive done a max effort. I had never paid much attention to what happens after I finished however
I had just got out shower 10 min earlier yes..
I had just got out shower 10 min earlier yes..
So you are planning a sex romp!
Unfortunately not..lockdown rules. Maybe fit in a Valentine's beat off later but that wasn't the reason for the shower..
I thought it came down to normal in 20 min or so?
Not sure where you got that from. It should drop below exercise levels soon after you stop, but your metabolism is elevated for a day or so after intense exercise - it's called Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption or EPOC. And an elevated metabolic rate means a higher heart rate. Mine is 15-20 beats over full resting for the rest of the day after intense exercise, and it'll only return to it's lowest point after several days of rest.
If i stay mostly in zone 3 it takes about 30 mins to drop to normal.
If i go nuts and a lot of zone 4 and 5 it will take a few hours or overnight
Had you been upstairs and back to put on your fitness device to find out your heartrate?
Similar for me molgrips. Resting usually around 60 but after a good ride doesn’t drop below 80 for the rest of the day, but back to normal the next day.
Next day for me.if an evening session
Clearly my info regards 20 min and back to normal is total nonsense then
Cheers all
I usually have a routine on the turbo after a workout or race or TT, where I do a very gentle 50-125W cool down at a lower cadence of 70-80rpm instead of ~100+ until my heart rate gets below 100bpm and I complete the current kilometre, having been as high as ~185 crossing the finish line...
Typically ~10mins of riding after re-launching Zwift, which adds maybe another ~2mins.
No idea how long it takes to get to something under 60bpm.
Clearly my info regards 20 min and back to normal is total nonsense then
I did a Bupa health screening thing a couple of years ago. The 'fitness' test is steping up and down on a small box for a minute or so at a modest rate. My HR was back at resting before he could stick the monitor on my finger after stopping! He was quite surprised, which just shows you how unfit most people they see are! Apparently most people find it challenging...
