... without getting into a tetchy argument?

I've just been reading the "old standards you would no longer touch" thread, and it seems like people are almost inventing things to disagree over.

So how long do you think a thread could go on before someone says something mardy? A single reply? A dozen? An unspecified amount until TJ turns up?

Let me be the first to say how horribly and irredeemably wrong you are not just about this but a selection of other random things that you haven't even mentioned on the forum ever. 😜

This place is a sea of tranquility at all times. Now back to some jolly japes about whose political parties are best.

I may be one of the guilty on the aforementioned thread. 🤔

Joking (I promise) aside it's really not every thread. The ones that are heavily opinion and value driven are usually the ones where this trait emerges first whereas the more functional/problem solving/need an expert ones are a bit more benign.

The political bickering winds me up because it's so pointless. The views are dug in deep and noone is ever going to budge.

But if you think this is bad I suggest my local Facebook residents group would make this place look like a playground scrap compared to a global nuclear war.

There are certain words, phrases that are like catnip to the argumentalists.

TJ you are just about my favourite poster (particularly after your epic ride thread). I wouldn’t have you any other way.

Really? My favourite poster is that one of Farah Fawcett. Or maybe the knickerless tennis player.

These days,it never takes long once the usual suspects turn up with their interpretation set to stun. 😉

Could be it's just the mood of the Forum Nation at the moment.
I miss the threads that would be derailed/highjacked using only nonsense and quality photoshopping. 🙂

Ahha that reminds me, the Surron thread, there was a good photoshop opportunity in there.

This place is a reflection of society in that there are quite a few people who can't handle someone disagreeing without taking it to the extreme and seem to have to argue a tiny point to death. It does keep the topics rolling though so in the dullness of the day there is always a new post

It's not really a place though, is it.

A great strategy for a harmonious forum experience I find, is to avoid any of those threads where the title is someone's name followed by an exclamation mark or two. The same half dozen or so, terminally argumentative types are drawn to them like moths to a flame.  In fact, maybe we could do with a few more.  A bit like those jam jar wasp traps people use to keep the annoying ****ers away from the barbecue! 😉

I suppose you'd prefer tumbleweeds? Luckily not everyone on here is as keen on censoring people they don't agree with as you seem to be 😤

Thinking long and about it (quietly quitting work today) we need a new forum along side chat and bike (whatever that is) just for arguments. Politics, religion and society. I suggest: Rats in a Bag.

Look on the Airfix or Tamiya thread. We're all lovely and supportive on there.

Actually don't, some of you will **** it up.

It should be possible to have an exchange of veiws and opinions without getting tetchy or mardy, which I think was the point the OP was making.

Some people can get extraordinarily angry when others express opinions different to their own. In fact they often assume that the person expressing a different opinion must be trolling as for them that is the only possible explanation.

Which isn't really conducive to constructive debate. And has the effect of censoring anyway.

ernielynch, I think doris5000 was pretending to be moody, not actually having a go.

I guess that’s why things often get so argumentative, it’s hard to read a poster’s intention, even though it might be obvious to them as they write.

A hifi forum I used to be part of had a section called “the pub car park” where no rules applied and was a fun place to let of steam. Mind that was a pretty civilised place anyway, only arguments about whether voodoo magic expensive cables were worth it etc.

on an HiFi forum that sort of thread must have been a troll magnet.  were they used as a honeypot to keep the trolls off the other threads?

Yes the crying emoji was a hint that the comment might not have been totally serious but it was a point which I wanted to make anyway.

I reckon there is a significant difference between expressing your opinion and getting angry with someone for having a different one. Some people seem to struggle discussing stuff without getting angry. Have a look at the Huw Edwards thread for an example of posters getting needlessly angry.

I hate to be pedantic, but those aren't actually laws. Yes, I know, they are just amusing observations and I'm not trying to spoil anyone's fun, but let's at least have some standards about language an meaning and save the word "law" for things that are actually universal principles.
