41 seconds here, but I've got a cold. I am curious about the norms.
Maybe take two deep breaths to clear the lungs a bit, then hold the third.
Post the results here- time, age and sex. (41, 47, male)
If enough people put up then I'll try and do a Stoner-esque graph.
Busy this morning then?
Every day brings new challenges.
I remember watching the Jack Osborne and 'celebrity chums' thing on free diving and I was very impressed with what could be achieved with the correct training (yoga, breathing exercises etc**). I think most of them could do 3:30 - 4:30 in a relatively short space of time.

I can swim 100m underwater at my local pool if that helps (with a dive)
51 seconds, 26 years old, Male (not too good but I had to be subtle as I'm in the office and 'meant to be' working).
I've done over 4 mins sat on my sofa and 2 and a half or so static underwater, but I know people who can do plenty more. The AIDA static apnea record is 11mins 35sec.
About 55 seconds. 34 year old male.
But I was just sat here reading Stephen Fry's musings on the iPad so I wasn't exactly exerting myself.
And in my defence, I've got the asthma. I've got a note from my mum and everything.
I did 4 lengths of a smallish pool on holiday in Portugal last year. The record to beat was 2.5, so when I got the 3rd I felt I had to push on. Everything went a bit black though and I didn't feel very well...
:o(
Hang on - I'll have a go and let you know in a minute...
you've had 55 seconds MF result is.....
My record from when I was younger (17-18) was 3:33. These days I'm lucky to see more than 1:20 (28).
92 seconds - 25 years old - male (asthma sufferer)
I can hold my breath until I go blue in the face. and I'll do it unless I get my way.
1min 52 - in the middle of a lecture ..... Didnt really want to go blue in class . 23 year old male
MF - RIP...
2 mins - 38/male
the whole length of the 2nd severn crossing,
its a game we play holding ur breath on the bridge,
i do always speed up 😀
At the dive club in NZ saw a guy hold his breath for about 7 mins, amazing.
I can swim a length of the pool underwater, 25metres... last time I tried. 100m underwater is pretty good going <heresjonny>
just held for 1min 30sec. started to feel a bit twitchy so figured it would be a god idea to breathe.
2 min 2 secs. 22 male.
colande - tried the channel tunnel yet?
Just managed 1:20, 42 male. But then I only gave up smoking last year.
90 seconds. Male 56. Though after 3 seconds I thought i was done! Also I breathed out a bit at 60 as the CO2 buildup triggers the gasp reflex.
2 mins and 4 secs, despite making the mistake of reading Mudshark and TJs posts and holding back a giggle. Watching the Red Kites outside calmed me a bit.
Oh male smoker 44
2:18, 31, very unfit at the moment and just had a very strong coffee and bacon butty, so very impressed!
I used to swim 3x25m lengths underwater when I was 15-18, can just about do 2 now.
edit: feeling quite dizzy now!
Still holding it...
1 min 40 secs
37 year old Male
I tried to hit 2 minutes but my head was ready to pop, only has here reading people's times.
About 2 minutes.
4 lengths underwater is very good..
About one a half for me.
Off to google for the Jack Osbourne thing..
a pi55 poor 71 seconds, 34 years, male
(i have hurt my neck at the moment. I'm sure that will have had an effect!)
I used to be able to do between 2 - 3 mins comfortably about 15 years ago, after a hit from the bong . . . . . . .
Just over three hours.
Sorry - I thought you said 'how long can you hold your breasts'. No wonder I was getting some funny looks in the office.
3m42s 34yr male who's eaten too many pies.
I'm a certified freediver though, so I guess i have a bit of an advantage!
I had a "who can hold their breath longest" competition with a girl in a bar once. Got to about 70 seconds and more or less blacked out, and she still beat me.
...and she still beat me.
Aye, but she probably had bouyancy aids 😯
53 secs [stood at work], 52 yr. old ex heavy smoker, male
20 seconds. Is that good?
49 seconds on a deep breath - male 38 - postman getting over a stinking cold.
Tried holding it on a exhale - 20 secs.
I think about 2 minutes when I tried a few time a year or so ago.
heresjonny - MemberI can swim 100m underwater at my local pool if that helps (with a dive)
That's impressive, though. With a couple of minutes relaxation, some hyperventilation till things go a bit funny, I've swum about a length and a third of a 50 metre pool. Blue lips and a big headache though!
Oh, but no dive, although I don't think that would have given me another 33 metres!
I think about 2 minutes when I tried a few time a year or so ago.
Ok but what about today?
i watch these on my iPhone when the TV's crap - which is a lot.
this is david blaine being surprisingly watchable!

17 mins by the way. (after O2)
2.28 secs 39 year old lard ass!
i did 1:45 - 34 year old man
I just did 1:45 while sitting on the loo, I reckon I could have got to 2mins if my life depended on it but it was starting to feel unpleasant and I needed a poo.

Try again sat on a stool...? 😀
I sometimes do this while on the M1. But instead of time, I go by distance (which is therefore also dependant on speed). I can usually manage 2 miles which at speed limit of 70mph would be about 1:43
I could go further or probably hold on longer but the combination of going dizzy / blacking out at the same time as exceeding the ton isn't probably how you'd want to present your defence in front of the beak.
Years ago I did 2 lengths (50M). I was imagining I was one of these freedivers soooo..relaxed.
My mate pulled me out of the water at 50M because I'd passed out and was floating face down! -
I haven't tried it since!
i did 1:45 - 34 year old man
but world weary ?
Drac - MemberI think about 2 minutes when I tried a few time a year or so ago.
Ok but what about today?
Just did 1m40, but that's after lunchy beers, 2 cups of strong coffee and all the fevered excitement of corporate property insurance.
2.10 42 year old bloke, going to have a proper go soon
1:20 40years old male 😛
Right, here we go Haaaaaaap.........................................................................................................................................
I saw 62 secs on me watch but then I passed out so I'm not sure exactly. I'm 53 & totally unfit. (until this time tomorrow, after which I'll have been out on the bike for the 1st time this year)
2.11 21 male
Holding your breath under pressure is very different. A 30 second wipeout/hold-down in decent sized waves feels like a LONG time.
In properly big waves it must be pretty horrific. Eloquently explained Here
2:25, 29, male, unfit :-/
I dunno what that fellatio chart has to do with holding your breath unless you've got a blocked nose. Mind you I've got an 8" tongue & can actually breathe through my ears, so the girls LOVE me!
