Trying to sort flights for our daughter to Bali in June (bit of a pre-Uni blow out trip after she's had a pretty s**t year)..
We've found some with just 2 hours 20 minutes between scheduled flights. Is this too short to be practicable? It'll be connections at Jakarta if that makes any difference...
Thanks!
It's 10+ years since I was there but I seem to remember Jakarta airport being fairly efficient and easy to get around. Can be a long walk depending where your gate is but if you get bags checked all the way through I reckon that 2+ hours is enough time between planes. And if it all goes wrong then Jakarta to Denpasar is an internal flight so should be regular cheap alternatives.
Reckon that should be more than enough, done much shorter connections than that in my time and the baggage has still made it through.
Worst case is the bags don’t make it and they get delivered to your accommodation by the airline the next day. Just stick some board shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops in your hand luggage and you’re ready for any eventuality.
By the way, I love Bali, been three times now and will be going again for my honeymoon next year.
Thanks guys. Good to hear that might be ample (when looking this morning there was 5 hours between flights but now seems to have reduced to 2hrs 20). We we're wondering whether post-Covid things may have changed a bit? Anyone with recent experience?
My brother went through last week with four hours and two young kids and had no problems. >2 hours hould be fine.
Check the flight timeliness performance of your flight to see if it is frequently delayed though. If it is, then maybe look for something longer than a two hour transfer as if is regularly an hour late, you won't have much to spare.
One other factor to consider is whether the flights are booked with same airline/alliance - if so then if the first flight is late they will just put you on a letter onward flight from Jakarta. If it is flights in separate alliances and the first flight is delayed, your daughter is likely to have to buy a new ticket for the onward flight.
Immigration will be done in Jakarta so it's generally a good rule to leave an hour for that. If bought on one through-ticket then as mentioned if she missed the domestic connection if the long haul was delayed, as a flight departing the UK she would get 'duty of care' to get her on the next available flight and food etc if a long delay. It's most important to have a through ticket on the way back for the protected connection, so if the domestic were late enough to miss the long haul she would be put on the next sensible flight back. Normally over 2 hours connection would be plenty.
Do you still have to pay for the immigration visa in local currency or dollars ? That used to be a complete PITA. I remember the terminal I went into ( from Singapore) being very small …
