currently in the process of kitting out our bus. one of our requirements is to have a black water canister mounted externally on the van so that we have warm/ luke warm water for washing and cooking (shorter boiling time), a bit like a solar shower. was thinking about swapping the nearest bike channel on the bike rack for a flat section/plank so that i can fix a canister to it. it would however mean that i couldn't close the bike carrier without removing the canister first.

i then got rather excited about this:
[img] [/img]

it would be perfect.. we rarely use the innermost channel as the handlebars hit the roof if you open the tailgate...

then i saw the PRICE.... that's without the rack!

how easy would it be to knock something similar up whilst keeping the costs within this universe?

surely some cut down ally/steel/ti bars would do the trick with strategic bolt holes and required bolts? considering you already have the rack.

Or a solar shower left on the dashboard bit that builders cover with papers, pie wrappers rawl plugs etc. Water stays warmer inside, easily portable and under a tenner.........
T5's are expensive because they are ace.

no no no no no....

i already have the VW rack.... 2nd hand was still north of 300€

what i want is a canister full of water that heats during the day, meaning we have warm water for the evening... be that warm water for cooking or washing.

what i liked about the rack in to OP was the Zurrschiene (honestly do not know the brit. name for this) and the abilitly to attach a canister to this.

i want to fix some of this:

.. to the existing rack. will have to have a fiddle...

Oh I see sorry.

That looks like the standard stuff that the fit universal seats in Citroen dispatches and the like, shouldn't be too hard to find.

Agree with the above...seems you're going to great and expensive lengths to produce something you can achieve by banging the kettle on for two minutes.

If I were determined NOT to use the kettle q.v. 🙂 , then Id be having some fun researching portable solar water heaters/DIY pool heaters.

This time I'll try and be more helpful

Surely the solar collector (black pipe array) has to go inside the vehicle to gain the heating benefit of the green house effect?

That's what I meaning ampthill - held up against a south facing window (unless you're in NZ). Doubt a large external tank will get much above tepid on most days.

I 'get' what the OP is seeking - I've worked for protracted periods in various desert environments around the world and have used the 'Hot' water container method for showers.....works a treat, however miss that pre-dusk shower then you'll be waiting until the following evening ....can get smelly!

A kettle would be sadly inadequate for the volumes OP suggests. In fact, I would suggest that OP forget mounting said canister on the tailgate (unless you’re happy to move your van as the Earth rotates…T5 sun-dial sounds like a PITA……however they do breakdown regularly so at least it’ll have ‘a’ use…) and go for a roof mounted ‘surface’ of, say four or six canisters. This way, gravity can work to great effect with your hydro needs…. imaginative hose-work needed... 😳

Like I said, set this up right and it’s very effective.

thanks for the suggestions guys, but i don't want a permanent fixture on the motor. don't want to start cutting holes for pipes or fitting a roof rack. already have the bike rack, and as said rarely use the inner most rack. using Unwin Rails would mean i can still use the inner most rack if i wish or simply remove it and fit a canister.

have used a solar shower in the past and the water so sometimes so hot i had to pour some away and mix with cold.
the water doesn't need to be near boiling hot in the canister. it's so that i don't waste too much gas bringing water to the boil for cooking as well as for washing/cleaning my teeth, etc...

i like the first link, Stoner. would be good if it had a large suction cup on the base of it meanig it could be removed quickly.

link it to an insulated storage somewhere via a flow and return hose, a 12v solar powered pump via an SLA battery and charge controller and it can chunter away all day slowly heating up the tank of water 🙂

Water tank in roof bunk (just placed in the bunk while in use)

with 2 hoses hanging down then pusked onto...

A black copper pipe bent into long ziz zag

attach back pipe to sunniest window with suction cups

Convection will circulate water

Black pipe sitting outside the vehicle will be fairly pointless

How much water do you want?

Large

Heats water while you drive and/or your could link it to a solar PV panel as big as you like.

Obviously you could scale up the size of the water heater.
