I've laid on a few in shops for 5 mins, but its no comparison to 8 hours next to a fidgeting loved one. The last one I got was a disaster - quite expensive pocket spring and memory foam job but never been really comfy, always too hot and now my backs shagged I need a change to hopefully get a pain free night.
So what's the secret to a good nights sleep?

Aren't ikea bed/mattresses a weird size? So you stuck buying a complete bed and bedding from them?
Our last mattress came from Dreams, maybe not the best outlet but it did have a 40day return guarantee. The main issue with this is that you'll probably ask them to take away your old mattress... and they don't keep stocks of mattress in these shops, they order them in for you.. with a waiting period.
Right then *rubs hands together and flexes fingers* I might not know much about bikes, but mattresses? Oh yes! 🙂
I'm 6'4" with a troublesome back and I've tried the lot. A mate of mine once said (he very wiseman) that you spend all your time either in bed or in your shoes and as such they're what you should spend money on. Certainly think he's got a point with the former. In brief you want a decent pocket sprung mattress. Ideally it will have a couple of inner layers of larger springs, with secondary springs inside the bigger ones. On top of those will be a supplementary layer of smaller (but more numerous) springs and even a third layer of even smaller springs. On top of that you have your wool etc padding. It should also have at least two layers of side stitching all the way round which prevents it from sagging out through the side. You can spend many many thousands on a properly sprung mattress. However if you want a decent one without spending the earth, go to John Lewis and look at their own brand ones. You're still going to part with £500+ for a good one, but its well worth it and they usually have a "bed specialist" in each store who can advise you properly. I spent years and much moolah on various sh*te mattresses (incl the rubbish that Ikea peddle to the unwary) before chancing on John Lewis. Avoid memory foam, sweaty as anything. Avoid "hard" mattresses. The mattress should give to the shape of your body and then support it from that point (hence all the smaller springs), hard "back friendly" mattresses are usually the opposite of that and should really only be used by people who are very heavy (18 stone+)

Hope that helps!

Had our 2 years and yet to find it sweaty or regret buying it, shirely if you get hot put less sheets (thinner duvet) on?
I wouldn't suggest there for everyone but they were they only one were could feel was any different & instantly comfortable in afternoon of trying mattresses.
I also don't have a problem with memoryfoam being too hot.
I agree with the sentiment of spending 1/3 your life in bed though. We've got a super king sized tempur which is fantastic.
Good quality sheets might help?
Vi-spring.
no no no, all wrong, waterbed and black satin sheets, leopard skin briefs. sorted.
you forgot the mirror over the bed...
Always amazed me how the human race has managed to survive all those years of sleeping on things other than expensive mattresses...
400tpi polyester sheets with rayon wool effect duvet cover. I'm struggling to see where there's any room for improvement?
Don't just buy the first one you see, you can't make this decision quickly, best to sleep on it.

The last one I had was a disaster - quite expensive hand job but never been really satisfying, always too hot and now my backs shagged.
