No problem with my current iphone SE but need to change (battery dying) and thinking of a larger format.

On my mtb no problem but on my road bike I use the jersey rear pockets. I don't want to add larger seat bags.

What do others do?

(battery dying)

Doesn't cost much to replace the battery if that's your only motivation to change it.

I resented migrating away from the 5SE - had to replace it in an hurry though and and now have the smallest 11. It is a fair bit bigger but... you only notice the difference in your pocket for a day or two

In a plastic freezer bag in my jersey pocket - and it's a Samsung A70 which is a pretty big phone. Not an issue on the bike, but I admit I'd like a smaller phone for when I'm running.

Shorts pocket, jersey pocket, pack or a running belt depending on where I'm going, how long for and how wet it will be.

Thanks...  the reasons for wanting to change the SE is not only the battery but I also fancy a better camera and, to be honest, I'm not really a fan of Apple, having said that though, the phone has basically been OK.

Currently I put the phone either in my zipped shorts pocket or in my backpack on the mtb.

On the road bike I put it in the rear jersey pocket (sometimes in a sandwich bag).

With a bigger format I could still do the same for the mtb but not so sure whether the bigger format would work well in a rear jersey pocket on the road bike.

you dont say what you are replacing with but most phones are waterproof these days.

TBH the more it fills a road jersey rear pocket the more secure it is going to be, assuming it doesnt get too tall to the point it is sticking up beyond the lip

Same phone (SE 1st gen?) same prob, just reminded me, grrr. Tight-walletitis, it’s been dying on me for years. I have it in a big Lunatik Taktik case which is probably overkill. This means it lives either in a (small, cheap, lightweight) frame bag suspended in front of the seat tube, or in small rucksacks.

I dislike riding with stuff in clothes pockets even more than dislike riding with small rucksacks, and that’s quite a bit.

On the tourer it goes in the rackpack but I zip it in the folding side pocket so it’s both cushioned and not over the wheel.

Whatever you do, don't put the phone in a saddle bag as the vibrations aren't great for it (based on customer feedback when I worked in a bike shop). My 11 pro is in a jersey pocket, inside a sandwich bag as although phone is waterproof, sweat is more corrosive.

Que someone saying they keep their phone in a saddle bag and saying it's ok.

Mine lives in an Otterbox Defender case; they're not cheap but they're very protective. They're slightly rubbery to the touch so they tend to stay put in jersey pockets when riding over bumpy stuff. Although I'll stick it in a plastic zip-loc bag if I'm expecting it to get damp.

I have a waterproof phone with a case that covers the screen.

Jersey pocket on road
Running belt when pack-less on my adventure bike
Camelback when other MTBing

Jersey pocket on the road bike with nothing else jangling around in there to scratch the screen for my old phone.

I got a Lezyne Caddy Sack M for Christmas to put my Pixel 4a in - it just fits with the rubbery case on.
It's not the most efficient use of space, as the fold-over flap takes more space than a zip, but I'd rather that than the phone getting wet.

If you only need a phone to call a taxi/partner/emergency services then just get a cheap nokia or whatever with a PAYG Sim. Will be small, light and if you lose or break it then not the end of the world.

Cycle of Good recycled inner tube phone case:
Phone Case

Fits most smartphones (not REALLY big ones though)
Has a little pocket for a card or banknote.
Rubber, so stays put in jersey pocket.
Waterproof-ish.

I've got a king Kong mini which is ideal for the biking/spare phone option. Waterproof, Very small and light, 80 poond. Pretty usable all round as a regular phone. Camera isn't great but in good light it's passable

Iphone X, goes in a Rapha essentials pouch with my creditcard, a tenner and my house key (in a separate zipped bit) then in the back jersey pocket. The case is waterproof so keeps everything dry, most new phones are waterproof enough anyway, bit keeps road spray off it too, and back sweat!

iPhone X here, they're waterproof so it just goes straight in the jersey pocket for road rides. I tend not to take it for MTB as only ride a local loop, but if I do I just pop it in a poo bag to keep the grit out of it. Poo bag is unused in case you were wondering.

Ironically this is likely to cause more problems than it solves, over and above the annoyance of having two numbers and having to keep the PAYG sim active, because a cheapo phone is less likely to be waterproof and you need to take more precautions. When I upgraded to a fancy phone which was waterproof, my life became easier because I just put it in my back pocket as it was.

It did fall out once, when I was wearing a wool jersey with small very floppy pockets. Clearly my own fault as I identified the issue before leaving the house but convinced myself it'd be ok.

I have an iPhone 7+ with a silicon case and screen protector - it's pretty water resistant but I put it in a zipped MucOff wallet that fits nicely in a jersey pocket, along with some cash, card and ID (incase they can't identify me when scraped off the road) - the wallet keeps the spray off.

not so sure whether the bigger format would work well in a rear jersey pocket on the road bike.

Considering roadies are s’posed to carry a couple of spare tyres folded up in a back pocket, along with some sort of energy source, like a banana, even an iPhone 11 Pro Max will show less bulk, as its flat and fairly thin.
Mine has a thin clear silicon gel-type case, cost about seven quid I think, with a toughened glass screen ‘tector on the front.
As the case has a means to fasten a wriststrap to it, mine’s got a lanyard with a quick-release which has usually got the other end looped around a belt loop, so my phone cand slip out of a pocket and go missing, and if I want to take photos it’s easy to disconnect to hold up for easier framing.

Back pocket on a clear plastic pencil case on my road bike. Cheap, vaguely waterproof and works well.

Exped XXS drybag, I've had them since phones were fragile and didn't like a sniff of water-vapour let alone water.

Re. Waterproof phones, mine is IP68 so not worried about taking a photo in the rain or dropping it int beck but what about vapour? On longer runs it lives in a kidney belt in which it gets gently steamed. On the bike it’s in a jersey pocket so the sweat escapes a bit more readily.

Same phone (SE 1st gen?) same prob, just reminded me, grrr. Tight-walletitis, it’s been dying on me for years. I

Despite my SE showing 80% battery health in the diagnosis bit, mine started dying in the cold, with the battery emptied even when switched off. I use mine for navigation as it's not too big on the bars and Zwift.
I did use a battery case but it's just too heavy on the bars and doesn't work well with my mount.
I replaced the battery myself, £12ish for the battery (once I'd found a genuine one on fleabay) and about a tenners worth of tiny screwdriver, tweezers and double-sided tape to lift the screen. Took about 1/2 hour. Hardest bit is unsticking the old battery.
Lots of guides on the internet, I'm actually tempted to go back to it as a main phone due to its size

Agreed it’s pretty easy (although I managed to crack the plastic bezel/frame on Mrs P’s) and have changed a few 5 and SE batteries. But where to find a ‘genuine’ one is a good question? Seem to remember someone on here saying that they are all pretty much luck of the draw? Any link/recommend gratefully received, I do need to bite the bullet!

(to OP sorry for threadjack)

I can only assume it was genuine, it certainly looked identical. Battery life is great now, I guess time will tell.
Looks like it was a one off sale

iPhone 11 in its hardcase , in a Velopac in my jersey pocket. The Velopacs are great, a slightly more discerning and quality choice than the Rapha one 👍

@p7eaven iFixit do good batteries though they cost a bit more than £12 and sometimes they aren't in stock.

IPhone 11 Pro just in jersey pocket can’t see the need to do anything else it’s waterproof.

All depends how big the phone is you switch to. I have just switched from an original SE to the new SE and it fits in my rear jersey pocket just as easily.

They're not, at least not in the sub 500gbp range. More expensive phones like iPhones and Galaxy S20 (etc) are.

I can't quite workout this attaching of  the lanyard. On the road I'm typically wearing bib shorts and a jersey and can't think of what to attach any lanyard to. I like the basic idea though.

With a bigger format I could still do the same for the mtb but not so sure whether the bigger format would work well in a rear jersey pocket on the road bike.

All depends how big the phone is you switch to. I have just switched from an original SE to the new SE and it fits in my rear jersey pocket just as easily.

On the road I have a small underseat sadddlebag with spare tube, tyre levers, multitool, and quicklinks.

In my 3 rear jersey pockets I carry:

a small neoprene bag/case with another inner tube and small lenzyne pump,

my mobile (the pre-2020 SE) in a case

a couple of gels - sometimes

The SE fits in just fine.  I've now done some measurements of the pocket depths and it looks like the phone I'm considering would just about fit in vertically without being above the level of the top of the pocket. It's that aspect that I've been most concerned about, I don't want it falling out....btw,the phone height is around 165mm

I don't want to mess around changing batteries as I would like to have a better camera.

btw,I  don't use the phone to record rides...I use a Garmin for that.

Thanks a lot for all the input and the good ideas. Really very useful.

Exped XXS drybag

Yes I use one of these for iPhone 5 (too tight to upgrade and don't like big phones). Phone is in a leather slip case then popped in the drybag with a tenner and a credit card, then in back pocket.

Considering roadies are s’posed to carry a couple of spare tyres folded up in a back pocket,

I carry 1 tube and puncture repair kit/multitool in a tiny seat pack. Food and clothes in back pockets.

iphone SE, £400 and IP67.

my current iphone was under £350 new* and is similar. Accidently tested this when I put my filthy muddy mtb shorts in a bucket to soak and couldnt find my phone an hour later.

*avoid riding the hype wave of buying the newest flagship the month it is released, and apple are nicely priced compared to the competition.
