I have done about 170 miles in last 5 days and my ass feels like a tattered windsock.
Think a new saddle is called for and new shorts but with out getting to graphic how do people look after their ass? Magic creams potions lotions.

You need to harden your arse.
Failing that steroids and time off to recover.

brooks b17 and 600 series endura chamois for road milage - did 500k in one weekend back in june no problems from my backside

on the mtb i use SLR 135 saddles and 600 series endura chamois. used this combo for the puffer solo 24

What i find most important is to ensure my chamois/arse stays dry - so if there is even a hint of "could" rain or wet ground ill be wearing my waterproof shorts or my stealth lites ....

A big dose of MTFU. I have been riding without chamys for years now. Pain threshold is about 5 hours... Any longer ride, well, it just makes you want to finish faster 😉

You don't need fancy chamois just to get use to your saddle. However you might want to make slight adjustment to the saddle it makes a massive change in comfort.

chamois cream, good quality shorts, wash yer under carraige right after a ride, a sadle thats comfortable for you.

Padded saddles don't work for me, I use an slr c64 on my road bike which I find very comfortable.

But you need to just ride lots really.

I've never tried Assos minty arse lard, but decent shorts work for me. Sugoi RS bibs are great, I've had a lot of pain from Endura baggies in the past but never tried their more expensive ones.

There's definitely an element of MTFU. If I stop riding for a week or more, I just have to go through a bit of soreness for the first week or so. And Sudocrem is good to help healing if you have got any post-ride injuries. I discovered that after Dusk Till Dawn in the aforementioned Endura shorts left me with friction burns in places that are more often a problem for teenagers who have just discovered the joys of evenings in by themselves.

baggy shorts are only fit for the bin and casual wear .... ie riding to town they have no place actually riding !

Does anyone have a view on whether Assos shorts are worth the huge cost? I know some people swear by them, but it's an awful lot of £££ to spend on a short.

Germolene - the pale pink one, not the dark pink or the gel. It doesn't stain, is a bit slippery AND has a local anaesthetic 🙂

Agree with above: good shorts, good saddle, ride lots. Even the most minor adjustment to your saddle will make a world of difference, so don't be afraid to experiment, but only tiny changes at a time.

my next set of shorts will be skins shorts at 135 quid making assos seem like a relitively normal cost...

does amaize me folk will pay 70-80 quid for a saddle , complain they are sore and change it .... "what shorts you using" oh just some 20 quid lycra shorts"

I've been using gore shorts recently, very happy with the fit and comfort of them and a fair bit cheaper than assos. Although I do keep meaning to treat myself to a pair.

elite protect cream.
groin and top of inner thighs area.i dont get sore after a few hours on the bike using it.not that i get rubbed red raw or anything but from the start of the ride you feel comfortable and move easier without any discomfort once you get going.

I use Assos shorts and find them amazingly comfortable. In the past I've used all sorts of different brands (incl. ground effect, gore and endura) and find the Assos to be most comfortable. I didn't really notice when I was doing shorter days, but at weekends I sometimes ride 8 hours both days so I really notice the difference. My other shorts were rubbing raw patches which was quite unpleasant (even with chamois cream).

For the ladies shorts anyway, the older Assos were quite tightly cut around the thighs but the newest pair I have are better and the waistband is very nice. The sizing is a bit small though (I hope!) so if buying online be careful.

So, for me - definately worth the cost.

quick Q to the women - why do womans shorts get thick (3/4 cm) high waist bands ? and mens get 1 cm cut you in half waist bands ?

i inherrited a pair of my missus` shorts as endura had stitched a mens 400 series chamois into womans shorts and the waist band on em is sooooo comfy !

Best shorts you can afford. Or to put it another way, if you can't afford Assos, save up until you can. They cost twice what other expensive shorts do, but mine look basically new after many thousands of miles, so I reckon the longevity makes them far better value for money and vastly more comfortable than normal shorts at the same time.

trail rat - Skins have a pretty broad waistband (about 3cm) - I was surprised as I've only ever used ones with a standard 1cm one.

I am led to believe that Assos don't last so well these days - built for performance not longevity.

Giordana and Lusso are good options IMO.

I've been suffering from saddle soreness. It feels like the hairs on my arse are getting pulled when i've been riding for a while, so i shaved the contact areas to see if it helps (seriously 😆 )

I'll report back on how it was after my ride later today.

I think that's only if you shave between the cheeks (I'm sure someone will post the link to the bloke who did just that...)

Find a saddle that suits you, get some good quality shorts, I ordered a second pair of Assos F1 Mille's yesterday (£135 from Ribble) but I'm still not sure if they're worth the extra (I definitely wouldn't pay the £160+ RRP), use Assos cream on longer rides, I've tried Sudocreme in the past and found it didn't help.

DZ Nuts works well. I use bog standard bib shorts of varying varieties (as i'm not good enough to buy Assos) but plenty of Nuts cream makes a great difference

friction burns? then use some lube like Assos or other quality ass-lard
why use sudocreme as a cure when you can prevent it with chamois creme?

s0rry but chamois cream doesnt work for everyone

with me it softens up my skin - ive tried countless kinds - best ive had has been vaseline - all the others result in blood shed and boils ..... and a week or 2 off the bike to sort it out ...

my arse resembles a well used brooks now though !

Can't justify the cost of Assos anymore ,but they are comfortable.
And I think you'll find we say arse on this side of the Atlantic..
