How do people afford BMXs?

I cycle to work every day and I see ever increasing numbers of them (and cruisers and fixies).... cheapest BMX to buy seems to be 180 and given the average pocket money is £2.50 p/w how on earth are so many people affording them? I earn more than the average paperboy but I can’t comprehend spending more than 50 on a bike.

I’m guessing most on here are earning significantly above the national average – are you all the ones riding BMXs?

What percentage of your pocket money do you spend on your bikes (not running costs)?

Maybe they're company bikes?

Not as expensive as you think I lease mine from littlewoods catalogue at a rate of £1.80 PCM.

I blew a huge wad (of money) on a bmx just yesterday. Should arrive any day now, getting pretty excited.

I think in these hard times most people need to sell their BMW's in order to afford it.

I think you can lease them back from the company you sell it to; that way it comes under the monthly current budget and not the capital account.

A complete fail on the grips. Did they just give up, or run out of gold ?

There aren't an 'awful lot' of them... unless you live near to a large employer who is part of the BMX group??

You're just jealous, have a fixation , therefore you notice them all... and I for one pity you. Jealousy is such an unattractive quality.

You clearly have BMX envy. You probably ride a grifter.

I had a Grifter, and I din't envy the BMXers at all, as they seemed to mostly be nursing injuries like smashed teef and faces, instead of being able to go out riding their bikes.

And their flimsy little bikes soon broke, whereas my Grifter would break the pavement yet still keep going.

And I am a better bike rider than any of my mates what had BMXs. Mainly cos I was able to continue riding my bike whilst they were laid up with smashed teef and faces.

Grifters rocked.

What does it explain, tomthumnb; what does it explain?

I also had a BMX at one stage. It was crap.

What can you glean from that snippet of info, I wonder?

A lot of BMX purchases are a result of crime. Cola bottles, white mice and sherbet dips are all being sold on the streets England. BMXs are considered a status symbol by those doing the selling and are therefore the bike of choice.

I afforded mine by doing loads of paper rounds. Had a pretty nice one at one point just before I packed it in (still annoyed I did that) - Federal Division (bought this 2nd hand from a mate), primopro wheels that I had to rebuild with DT spokes, Odyssey brake, hoffman bars etc.

One summer me and a mate built one from bits from a Raleigh Grifter frame a set of forks off a Puch Maxi 50cc stepthrough scooter and some extra footpegs on the back. It took two of us to push it up the downs and then we'd both ride it down one on front one on the back. It cost us nowt as it was all in Stevens shed of wonder that rocked to the sound of a gheto blaster playing electro.
