HELP! Hot water won't come out any more so assuming the washer needs replacing? I have no service valves as yet so will need to drain the tank. However, I appear to be completely incapable of working out how to remove the tap - any clues? Do I need a special tool to grip the serrated part? And yes, I know the silicon needs doing as well...

Thanks

what about the nut around the base of the part that the tap shaft goes into?

serrated part off first, then probably a screw holding the handle on, then a good adjustable spanner on the hex form where the valve pillar meets the tap body.

I'm guessing you might need to lightly grip the serrated thing with some vice-grips...it won't be done up that tightly, and will just need a quarter turn to be able to loosen it by hand. You should then see a screw inside it which you loosen...and off you go.

I'm not a plumber!

The serrations are a bit of a giveaway though I think.

Ah but the threads are reversed for cold and hot.

(only joking)

Someone may have glued it in after getting annoyed that it was constantly coming undone...

Cold water feed turned of to the tank 'might' stop it from draining, you can of course test this before removing the valve...:-)

serrated cap unscrews to show a screw which allows top section of tap off spanner around hexagonal nut at base for main body removal, however knackered tap washers only usually cause dripping, so could be more at fault than washer, possibly come apart inside?

check the flow straightener on the spout first
