how do i respond to posts in the forum, with reference to earlier posts, so that they show up in my post with the little border thingy round them

Use the "quote" button above the Post box..

and cut and paste the txt:

[ quote ] blah blah blah [ /quote ]

blah blah blah

remove the underscor _
or paste the quote highlight it and hit the quote button

Copy the text you want to quote
CLick the "quote" button
Paste the text after [ quote ] when it appears
Click the "/quote" button

If you use Chrome then I've got a plugin which adds a Quote button (and other things) to each post 🙂
