I want to record exactly what my laptop speakers are playing. How do I record to get the same playback quality?

try audacity at sourceforge. You may also need to download some open source codecs depending on the file type you want.

Thanks. I've downloaded audacity, then right-clicked on recording devices and it's not listing a recording device other than microphone and Line-in (and I'm showing disconnected and disabled devices).

Not all drivers support it.

you need to enable something called stereo mix
(for windows 7)...

right click on the speaker icon bottom right
look at recording devices
right click somewhere in that window and "show disabled devices"
stereo mix should appear

Get a 3.5 to 3.5mm cable, plug one end into the headphone socket and the other end into the line in/mic socket. Then use your software to record the line in/mic channel.
