We've got an interior door with a wax finish that is a mess. How do I* get it off? Sanding is proving to be hard work as it just loads the paper almost instantly.

*I in this case means my wife. Obviously.

Goddamnit, beaten to it.

Can you put the whole door in the freezer?

Use a cabinet scraper to get most of it off. Wire wool will take forever.

Get it dipped and stripped.

Well... it turns out you are all wrong.

This does it a treat.

Squirt it on. Wait 5 minutes. Wipe it off.

Result!

You might not have to take all the wax off.. just rub it down with some 0 (medium wire wool) and see what its like. What sort of mess is it in??

This interests me in that I've had my old pine doors stripped for years now and never put a finish on as couldn't decide what to do - oil and wax both seem to have pros and cons. The bathroom door does feel like the grain lifts a little when the shower is used but I recall reading about never finishing both sides of a bathroom door anyway or have I imagined that?!

Cabinet scrapers are the tools to use. I did a set of stairs, banisters and spindles which was a total ball ache of a job but a door should be a doddle!
