I've got a Xiaomi A2 and the Android One updates stopped last year. It's v10 last updated in July
How do I get Android 11 or 12 on there? Is it easy or is it so complicated that only a spotty teenager can do it?
A four year old phone? Get with the programme granddad.
Once the manufacturer and/or network stop supplying updates, you're out of luck AFAIK.
It's only 2,5yrs old !!
I don't want to buy another phone as it still seems to work fine
it should be relatively simple, there are lots of guides on XDA forums,
https://forum.xda-developers.com/c/xiaomi-mi-a2-mi-6x.7963/
basically you'll need to root the phone, then flash with a new ROM
may help.
I've done it a few times and it's a bit daunting (fear of bricking your phone), but not bad.
You can’t if the manufacturer isn’t providing updates anymore.
Depending on your level of confidence messing with the phone (and whether it’s supported) you could try another OS like Lineage.

If it still works, don't bother.
I recently did a double update (Android 10 to 12) on a Samsung and it's not really anything i'd be desperate to do, all my apps will cover everything back to about Nougat or Oreo. It's just a bit swishier.

Wasn't it released in July 2018?
it should be relatively simple
It's simple in the realm of geek hacking of phones, but it's still geek hacking of phones and as such can be fraught with problems. For example, some online banking apps won't work on a rooted phone.
@ElShalimo you don't need to update it, just keep using your phone until you find lots of apps you want aren't working any more, which will probably be many years hence.
thanks
I'll just keep using it until it dies

Nah, i rooted an ancient HTC that had stopped support at 2.3/gingerbread to run 5.0 Lollipop.
It ran. Incredibly slowly, and hot, and took about 2 hours to kill the battery.
So it's not always a good idea, but it's doable.
(It wasn't me only phone, was just an experiment)
which will probably be many years hence.
My 10 year old tablet, which hasn't received an update since 2014 only stopped supporting netflix just before xmas...
Just leave it as others have typed lots of apps won't work if you have been in and messed with the OS.
It will grind to halt with apps like youtube and Google no longer supporting your phone eventually like a few of my tablets have (Samsung's)
just keep using your phone until you find lots of apps you want aren’t working any more,
Is this a problem from a security point of view, given that it will no longer be receiving security updates/patches?
Asking as an owner of a perfectly good phone (Pixel 3a) that will apparently not be supported after the end of May...
@IHN - that was why I wanted to upgrade.
I suppose the Apps are frequently updated but the underlying OS is not getting updated.
Sometimes security updates are continued after feature updates finished. I don't know much about the actual risks from older phones though.
My phone updated itself to Android 12 last week, I then managed to call emergency services 3 times in 4 days due to the new improvements. Ive turned the power button emergency call off but its still a huge button on the power down screen which is easily pressed and cant be disabled that I can see.
