Just supposing I get into a tussle with a lorry and due to it subsequently driving off I only get the reg not the company name how would I find out who to speak to about damages?

Bollocks. I was pushed into the kerb (and managed to hop onto the kerb itself) by a lorry to avoid its wheels, then witnessed a girl having the same done to her infront of me by the same lorry. I caught up and noticed he was wearing dark sunglasses on a grim, grey morning. He also had no appreciation for any cars around him. Luckily the lorry was livered and from I can gather from subsequent conversations with the company (they were VERY good and took it seriously so I can only assume he had 'previous') he lost his job.

There are two things here, firstly in the attempts of self-preservation this is not always possible and secondly marketing doesn't work, don't you know.

I was trying to talk to the driver when I should have been getting the name off the door (flat bed so nowt on the rear), he drove off and I only managed to get the reg.
the point about not wasting too much time and effort on it goes back to the point about not getting too wound up about incidents on the road. If it spoils your day more than it spoils theirs you have lost. so yes - remonstrate and if you can contact their bosses / police / dvla do so but don't obsess over it and wasted days of effort doing so.

just the waterproof, was in a mandatory cycle lane, lorry cut into it would have avoided it if the load of wire mesh hadn't been over hanging the side of the flatbed, ripped shoulder of jacket to shreds.
I did get a nasty scratch on my shoulder but I'm a rufty tufty mountain biker, I'll not be claiming for that 🙂
The lorry driver needs to be spoken to, at least.
I had a chat with a copper mate when I recently got almost squished by a lorry - he said (if I had had the reg number) they would definitely go and have words. Unless there is a fatality though they won't do much more than that. He seemed pretty frustrated about it as he's a cyclist too.

Unsafe load as well then. Was it mesh rebar ? That stuff is designed at 2.4m wide so it fits on a wagon without overlap.
Was there much rebar on the wagon ? There are only a handful of companies that supply rebar in the manchester area, let me know if you need a list but the coppers should be able to sort you out.
If you know someone at an insurance company they can set up a dummy claim, whack in the offenders details through their system and they will be able to tell you who the vehicle is registered to. it is illegal however so you might want to pretend you got the company name off of said van.
TJ's given the link above for how to get the details legally - you have a perfectly legitimate reason to get this through DVLA. Given an incident of leaving the scene of an accident, the police should also be interested.

So suggesting that not getting wound up. Contacting the police and giving him the link to the DVLA to get the details of the truck from is winding you up? I suggest you chill out a bit.

so the driver had an unsafe load too? report it then hopefully he will get some advice as to how to operate a 7.5 ton+ vehicle.
will see if police come through on this, will prob give CTC a shout later, I'll guess they'd chase it up, just wanted to email the company direct and say "are you going to pay for my jacket or do I have to go down insurance route?"
Sounds fair. When my incident happened (I had the opposite to you - company name, but no reg), I emailed the European depot and the local port depot (details found easily on the web). Got really quick and helpful replies - so it's definitely worth doing. I'm sure the driver's company will take the incident more seriously than some "fellow cyclists" do.
I read sometime back on 'honest John' in the ST of another way....If I remember correctly that you can report to the DVLA an abandoned car on your property give them the reg no and a nominal fee and they will supply the owners address. Whilst this isn't quite the case here maybe there's some similar method...........
Report it to a cycling insurance chaser, and they can access the reg number, as they need to send a letter to the company concerned, and its free for you.
Also not many peeps know that all buses and coaches need to have the name and address of the owner of the vehicle on the passenger side valance, behind the front passenger doors, on the outside of the vehicle.
Could have been serious, thankfully not, best to chase the driver though.
