On the bridleway down from Mickleham Downs towards Mickleham. Seems unfeasible. The car that is, I rode the bike there.

Without cross climate tyres - amazing it didn't roll over on the first damp blade of grass

Few drinks downed at the William IV and I'm sure it seemed feasible

Last Christmas (I gave you my heart) we were riding on the track around Kielder Water and came across a car on the bridleway. Little or no damage. No idea how it got there as there was a bridge just behind it that was too narrow for it to cross and there were no skid marks or broken vegetation on the road banking above it. The owner and his mates had just returned to try and get it out.

There's a reason we have a trail locally known as "Skoda track".

What is it? Vitara? It’s amazing how far a 4x4 can get if driven with commitment and a complete disregard for causing damage.

No idea what it is. 4x4 of some sort judging by the driveshafts.

Hmm, ladder chassis with body bolted to it, do I see a belt drive from the transfer box going to the front dif and the fuel tank hanging out the back like that makes me think it’s quite old.

Is it because people insist on claiming it is great, but truthfully no one really wants to ride it if they had a better alternative?

It will be some sort of jap softroader type thing. 4x4, ladder chassis, beam axle at rear but on coils not leafs, independent front suspension, pressed steel wishbones and front subframe makes it fairly modern. My guess is a Suzuki Vitara or something along those lines.

Looks like a fixer-upper. Bit of work, she’ll be fine...

This. Local paramedics seem to be very happy with theirs, and I’m perfectly happy with mine, had it for 12 years.

I thought it was going to be about getting this dredge through the jungle. Phenomenal.

How long has it been there for? Maybe it was driven in when the path was in better condition, and less overgrown.

There's a few old cars in my local woods, now surrounded by trees.

That's the great unanswered question. Shame they all rust away - what a bonanza for archeologists in 1,000 years time!

"Look, they had dickheads back then too." 🙂

It was/is a Suzuki Vitara, it has been there at least a couple of years. Occasionally joyriders make it on to the gallops at the top and make a right mess. Likely they did that and tried to get down as that path is much wider at the top before it narrows and steepest.

Last winter on a night ride we came across two well kitted out 4x4s trying to get up one of the other bridleways between Mickleham village and the gallops but they looked very stuck and a bit sheepish as they knew what they were doing and knew that they shouldn't be there. Reported them to the police and ranger as joyriders in possibly stolen vehicles. Not sure if anybody came out though as would have loved for them to get in some trouble.

Ha reminds me of the time the wife was out mtbing in the woods.

*Sends photo*

"Was this our car?" *

Plates had been removed but it had clearly been taken into the woods for a play and got stuck in a gully so been ditched.

*We had sold it 2 years previously....
