...was it with you this morning?

My car temp gauge recorded -13 @ 09.30, but people round here have been moaning of -14/-15.

My truck wouldn't run - I suspect frozen diesel. I've since got it going, but engine warning lights and loss of power have plagued me, so the AA will be out sometime before midnight hopefully as I have a long journey tomorrow (that I should have made today).

Only -7 at 9 am this morning. Friday was -12 at 08:30 could not even look at the throttle without sending the traction control into hysterics.

Called it a day when the car in front lost it and slid into the side of the road whilst doing nothing at all that I could see to provoke it.

-10 here this morning according to the dashboard thermometer.
It's not got above zero all day, it was showing -5 when I got home, I suspect it'll be another -10 or so tonight.

-10 driving in to work this morning - just collected Jnr from Beavers and it is -10.5 at the moment, so hoping for a new record in the morning.

MrsSwadey just keeps banging on about her year working in Russia - she saw -38, and thinks I'm moaning about nothing!

Met office predicts -7 for Chelt tonight. Sounds positively tropical compared to some of you guys. Looks like it might warm up for the weekend though, positive temps!

-14.5°C on the car thermometer in a frost hollow near Higham (Derbyshire again) this morning. -10°C on the way home and falling.

I think the car thermometers tend to overdo the minima a bit which probably means it was about -12°C in reality. Yorkshire has seen some low minima in recent days with -19°C and -18°C in / around the Vale of York.

Currently considering whether to commute on the bike tomorrow just to 'experience' these temperatures. It is not often you get to test out winter kit in these conditions in this country.

-11°C around 7:30 this morning

-7°C on the way home (met office weather station about a mile away has -6.4°C for the same time so seems fairly accurate)

I have walked to work in -23C and I can inform you that a base layer, Polartec 200 weight fleece and Goretex is not quite enough to keep out the chill entirely. Also, at those temperatures snow crunches not like the soft crump you get here but like walking on crushed glass. Almost a squeak really.

some lads working on a job up in Scottish Highlands for my company said it was -28 the other morning and every bit of plant we have up there is frozen solid or snowed in - and Im talking ex Swedish military Haaglund tracked vehicles here, those things can get anywhere

Closer to home I had -10 at 8am this morning, -12 now and thats city centre of Derby

Worth noting that the diesel sold in Sweden is probably mixed to have a lower gel point than the stuff typically sold in Scotland. So it's likely not the vehicle's fault if it doesn't start...

I commuted on the bike last winter when it was -15 (although it was a slightly drier cold than what we have at the moment) and you really need every stitch of clothing on and to keep moving. It's a really tricky balance - too much clothing and you sweat then the sweat freezes and that's just horrible. Too little clothng and you never ever get warmed up. About the only way I managed was to have lots of layers all with zips so it was easy to regulate temperature.

Only -13 this morning. -16.5 last friday.

I can't tell the difference beyond about -10 so propose we just work in 10s beyond that.

It was -12C at 05:45 when I cycled home from work on Friday AM. I'd already decided to only do a 30 minute ride as I was tired but even so by the time I got off the canal after 20 mins the pain in my hands was hard to believe. Taking my gloves off when I got home was painful and I could hardly bare to touch anything for about 30 minutes. By then the pain had become less localised and wasn't as intense but my whole arms were painful for a while.

Cold!

And I'm in Darley Dale t'other side of Matlock - seems like the Derbyshire Dales/Amber Valley region was one of the coldest - not seen any posts from the Hope Valley/Peak area yet though.

Was actually cold sat in the house last night with the heating on. Bit better tonight, but still blummin cold - not been above -5 all day

Real men were riding to work in the other thread over there

http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/minus-6-commute-was-funin-a-odd-way

I was ok in tights, overshoes, good base layer, fleecy windproof jacket and gilet. buff under the helmet and shorts on top. those who drove said it was -13 in the cars...

I had a fine layer of snow on my gilet front from my breath freezing on it.

well if you're going to make someone sleep in the garden they'll probably have a good idea of how cold it is

About 10 years ago there was a good deep freeze in the highlands and I had no problem driving my diesel Corsa around in low temps - never saw a temp higher than -15C daytime for a fortnight with overnight lows of -25C.

On the plus side, climbed Steale Waterfall in Glen Nevis, which doesn't freeze very often.

Didn't make it unfortunately. Looks like the -12°C commute I did on Friday will be as low as I go this year 🙁

In the end I was put off by the thought of 18 miles each way on the busy main road with cars / trucks trying to squeeze past on icy surfaces at temperatures below the effectiveness of rock salt / grit.

On Friday there was less traffic. Will probably leave it until I can get down the back lanes / sustrans route again now. -16.5°C on the car thermometer this morning 🙂

I drive from Belper (where it started at -10) down past the excavator and towards Ripley on the a610 every day at the moment, and as above I also got -18! Seems as though theyre not far off the mark then! When I mentioned it to a plumber at work he just scoffed at the idea!!

Last year in Canada I experienced -38 I have never experienced anything like it, truely a mind numbing day.

That said I was happy to walk about all day in -25 if it was sunny and I had the right clothes on

Crikey some of those are cold...drove home (to Malvern) from Swindon late last night and it was -9C. And both cars said -11C at around 8am this morning.

Don't fancy riding in it tbh.

We rode regularly in -5 last winter (and as recently as this Sunday) but there's a limit!

I'm really curious as its just never been that cold here in that London. Do cars start OK or is it causing grief? I mean with newish, otherwise reliable German and Jap stuff not 15 year old Rovers! Presumably in countries with reguar -10 temps the cars get a winter prep service but not in Derbyshire I suspect.

A "winter prep service" - what's that? These sorts of temperatures are relatively once you get north of Watford. Cars seem to handle it just fine - as long as folk aren't stupid with the lights/heater etc.

It seems most cars start without much problem - as long as the battery is in good condition. I'll try my 20 yr old volvo at the weekend - it's not been run for over three weeks but I've every confidence it will be fine......

Had to have new battery on my transit last Monday, which is three and a half yrs old, pretty piss poor to be fair. It was completely shagged!! That flat it even lost the key code for the stereo! Also a pain in the arse to fit as it's under the drivers seat and requires the finger dexterity of a watch maker not a builder to refit!!!!
