I've been woken up by it enough times now to know its not a heart attack but it can be flipping painful! Reminiscent of a a stitch after cross country running at school, right between the upper ribs!
Is that wind or acid reflux? Either way, might be worth talking to a medical expert if it's interfering with your sleep.
I saw a lady who required morphine for trapped wind pain post surgery
Because any blockage in your intestine whether food or wind will cause your intestine to try to push the blockage through, as it's blocked and can't get through it causes pressure which leads to pain.
I suffer from occasional blockages in my gut due to post operative adhesions from a burst appendix, very, very painful, I use Mebeverine, it's an over the counter  ( with caveats) anti spasmodic medication which prevents your stomach muscles pushing quite so hard and helps me enormously, obviously talk to a medical professional first but I'm sure there'll be something that can help ease the condition until it clears itself.
Good question, I've often wondered this. I assume it's down to pressure, a tube filled with liquid and surrounded by liquid is going to be in equilibrium whereas one filled with air is going to squish. But it's a blind guess, I've no idea.
Not trapped wind, but have had small bowel blockages, adhesions from Ileostomy surgery being the cause. Â The muscle spasms will go in waves of mild discomfort to doubled up in agony. Sometimes solved with over the counter painkillers, occasionally a trip to A&E for morphine and drips, last one, passed out in triage and got a 2 week stay in hospital - blockage took over 4days to clear.
You'll be able to sympathise with all the IBD sufferers. Prior to COVID I'd have it constantly due to having to sit in an office all day. Now it's a more rare occurrence as I work from home but when it hits it's like I've swallowed razor blades and is absolutely excruciating.
Yeah, about every 8 weeks so I get trapped wind that can put me out of action for a day or two. Doctors just shrug their shoulders.
WindSettlers are OK, but anti spasmodics are a bit more effective.

Get this often probably as part of the many symptoms of my IBS. Senocalm tablets used to work but they've stopped making them. Buscopan is good too. Gently exercise, yoga or stretching also helps, as does watching what you eat - there is a lot online but the NHs website is a good trusted source.
I also tried to think about my mindset - not worrying (sounds easier than it actually is) about IBS, as the worry itself caused more stress so more symptoms. I just try to think positively about it and not worry. I'm not ashamed and tell my mates if I need to - happy to describe my stools to them too which is always a laugh in a group of blokes.
I've had it a couple of times in the past. Possibly the most pain I have ever experienced!

Zing!
buscopan works wonders. i also suffer from IBS its horrible. at home i have to avoid gluten and diary, amazingly when im on holiday the symptoms massively improve and i can eat small amounts with limited impact. so stress related.
i also think posture has somwthing to do with it. sitting at a desk all day gibes me really bad back and hip pain despite yoga etc...
