16month old boy playfully lobs a small piece of Lego towards the TV- net result? Spidery cracks radiating from point of impact (no physical mark or scratch on surface).

I was present, it wasn't thrown in no way hard but half the screen is now a mass of blurring lines. Are the LCD panels THAT delicately protected???!

Shop says the cost of replacing the panel will be prohibitive. (It was only £300 from RicherSounds).

Nearly new TV going to the scrapper

We have the lego out at the moment I am so tempted to throw a piece at the telly to see what happens. I suspect nothing because i have knocked it off the stand before and it was fine.

Sounds like your boys got quite an arm!

I'd get him enrolled in a throwing related sports program, he could be your new bike every 2 months future.

POSTED 1 HOUR AGO # REPORT-POST

I remember my uncle (not that one) being in a fair sized car smash. Hit by a car whilst they were turning across a road. Car had "accelerated from 70". Their car spun, hatchback opened, Sony 14in CRT fell out. Stayed out all night. Was retrieved, dried, plugged in, worked. Just needed new volume knob.

Could it be so fragile as it was cheap and doesn't use a decent thick bit of glass?

[s]It[/s]He shouldn't have done that

I'd write a letter to the manufaturers insisting the instigate a plastic construction brick impact test immidiately....think of the children.

Are we talking Duplo or Lego?
Lego is only safe for 3 and up - because of its higher thrown terminal velocity 😉

Ermmm, they are no true LED panels on the market. Yours will still have an LCD screen, with a more even LED Back light.

This is the very reason I bought a plasma with a protective screen, designed for wayward Wii controller moments! My boys were used to tough ol' glass CRTs so no way was I was getting summit flimsy

Why? They are still LCD panels, just with different back lights.

If you want a tough flat screen get a plasma.

If the glass is toughened the process puts the glass under stress this means it can break for what seems to be very little impact. I have been carrying a piece of toughened glass approximately 100cmx50cm and it just shattered in my hands with no contact from anything else.

Hora, if it's a brand new TV then it's probably about time you replaced it anyway.

Probably because it's quite clearly just an empty frame surrounding something on the wall.

Speaking from experience with regards LED TVs. Our LED tv has had way more punishment than what caused the LCD tv to crack.

See thats your problem you bought LG.

I bought an £800 Sony LCD about 4 years ago, and now 2 year old Jnr FD has thrown all sorts of stuff at it, scratched his nails down it, pured water on it, and its still going fine 🙂

It's cursed.

Is that a knee-jerk reaction that you'd apply or would you chase down every avenue first? My home insurance is super-low and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm chasing this down to see if theres a satisfactory resolution first.

They aren't that delicate in general. I reckon yours must've been under stress of some kind - maybe the mount wans't straight or the TV has been assembled out of alignment or something.

Ours was broken by our son too... He did throw a PS3 controller at it though (it 'slipped' out of his hand!) Home insurance paid up no probs, and it won't affect the premium, etc. as we haven't claimed before...
That's what it is there for...

You mean who can I blame rather than take responsibility for what happened?
I dont see how there can be any other resolutions other than pay up or claim on contents insurance?

Well, knee-jerk or not (it bloody hurts to knee-jerk at the moment actually), you've asked the shop and they said it was too expensive to repair.
Oh, you mean you thought there would be a STWer more expert than the employee at the shop?

I suspect hora's going down the 'it's a manufacturing/design flaw so can I have a new one for nowt' route.

Right. Thought about it. Still a muppet.

Can't think of any reason that the glass would be necessarily be tougher on an LCD TV with LED backlights than it would on an LCD TV with compact fluorescent backlights.

Care to expand on your point?

GrahamS - how many layers to each screen, how compact are they, what are they made of and how do they effect the strength of the scree?

Isn't it basically the same LCD panel, but with different backlighting?
So from the LCDs to the front glass should be exactly the same construction, no? Same amount of protection from flying LEGO.

Behind that most designs just use LEDs around the edge instead of CCFLs, which lets them make the back unit a bit thinner, but I can't see how that alters the strength of the front screen?

Don't feed the Troll.

I don't normally but I'm genuinely interested.

Think of the whole screen.

Are you The Riddler? 😕

My first is in LCD, but not in LED.
My second in glass, but not in crack...

A straight answer is fine. Why is the LCD better protected in LED backlit tellies?

Why is it not? You're the one that's saying they're the same - prove it. Surely it's easier to prove than disprove. Fill your boots.
