Hovag no more. Current STW endorsed mattress?

So ages ago I was shopping for a mattress, saw the STW hive recommend the Ikea Hovag and went and bought an Emma. Hated it, sent it back, now I want a Hovag. But seems I'm too late! They're no longer made. What's the current mattress de jour? I'll listen this time 😉

Ooo, Ooo, can help with this, Valevåg is the replacement.

Picked one up for a friend the other day.

Took delivery of a firm VATNESTRÖM mattress about three weeks ago now. Apart from it being a massive pain on arrival because of it not fitting up the stairs (can’t really fault the mattress for that) it’s been a huge improvement over the tragic mess of a thing we had before. Don’t know if it’s quite the nicest bed I’ve ever slept in (still have distant memories of a fancy Hypnos mattress in a hotel from about 10 years ago) but if it isn’t it’s not far off and was a comparative bargain.

Know nothing of mattresses.

But I wholeheartedly approve "current STW endorsed" over the "du jour" and "go to"

Recently went through this and after consulting for the 'STW endorsed' mattress options, went for Emma's premium mattresses: https://www.emma-sleep.co.uk/emma-premium-mattress/. Chose 2 x EU singles for our superking frame 'cos Mrs a11y is a fidgety sleeper whereas I'm an infuriatingly light sleeper.

They're very comfy.

Almost always on offer - currently 55-57% off.

Pretty sure he sent an Emma back… also, why two singles? The Emma has that witchcraft “no motion” transfer foam. I’m sure there’s a vid on their website of somebody jumping up and down next to a stack of Lego and it not moving…

I’ve got an emma premium BTW, it’s firm but quite comfy and so far sleep quality has improved somewhat.

So, not really 'on offer' then?

Aye, had one. Sent it back. To be fair to Emma, the mattress was very comfortable, but I woke up feeling like I'd been run over by a train. Could possibly have been caused by something else but that was the first foam mattress I'd had and never experienced that before. Since sending it back I'm back on a shoddy old spare spring mattress and feeling fine, if uncomfortable.

It’s more than twice the price of the Hovag though, so not sure what the direct replacement is?
I bought one of the last available a few months ago, i actually found it by sleeping on one in a Krakow AirBnB and the fact i found it comfortable made me lift the sheets to find out the make.

Edit: Valevag or Vesteroy look to be similar, i paid £229 for a Standard double Hovag.

Following.

I'd be wary of buying an Emma - were they in the news recently as being up for sale?

Wow, my selective hearing I’m perfecting with Mrs a11y is spreading into selective reading. No idea how I missed that bit about having tried and returned an Emma mattress already 😀

In true STW fashion, I shall ignore your question completely. And the reasoning, research and thought behind it.

I recommend an Emma.

The only good thing about the Emma mattress or whatever blcamange in a box we've got is it fits up the stairs. Once unpacked though, you can no longer throw it out the window in disgust, so whatever you do don't unpack it

Ratchet straps and gravity.

I've got the previous version of the Ånnelund (called Hyllestad) bit more expensive. But oh so comfy...

I did make a point of going to try all the current options before we ordered ours in the Hope I’d not be able to tell the difference between the expensive one and the other, cheaper, versions. Unfortunately, with me being quite a large unit, there was quite a noticeable variation so I ended up stumping up the extra for the VATNESTRÖM. If you’re not quite so hefty this might change things I guess?
