I lift share to work. The person that I lift share with is a ****ing terrible driver, had no mechanical sympathy, no finesse and has the roadcraft of a hedgehog.

How do I change this when telling the person that their driving is crap will end in tears, and not liftsharing is not a practical option?

Help.

Get insured to drive their car.

Junkyard - I dont think that a driving instructor would help in this case. A crash might help though...

If its that bad then don't lift share would seem the simple solution.

Tell him to stop driving like a dick. End of.
If you end up paralysed or dead that wouldn't be a good thing so if he doesn't listen, find another way to get to work.

Given that most people think they're a better than average driver, when in reality the distribution is probably bell shaped, how about you take some time to consider that you are probably a worse driver than you think you are?

Ham it up.

Lots of flinching, some screaming, hold onto the seat or the handle for dear life.

Every time they change lanes without looking scream out "OMG they nearly hit you - did you not see them !!??!!".

When they break too late kind of jolt forward in the seat and slam your face on the dash. Scream some more.

Etc etc etc.

Fake car sickness.

Have fun with it....

Houston here (seriously :-))

What type of bad driving is it? - behavioural (boy racer, not paying attention etc.) or ability (genuinely poor driver but does pay attention to the road).

If the former then honestly talking to them about the way they drive would be the best thing and hopefully make them think.

If they are genuinely a bad driver despite focussing on the task then the best option would be professional training.

If somebody criticised my driving I would like to think I would take it seriously. I think I am a decent driver (i.e. safe without being so slow I frustrate others) when I pay attention but I have had a few lucky escapes when I was not fully focussed on the road and I will freely admit that.

One non-confrontational approach could be to say you are thinking of doing an IAM course and ask the person if they want to do it with you.

Next time you get in the car, but before they start driving, just ask them:
"Don't you know who IAM?"

Edit:Oops, beaten to it.

Use of the word "roadcraft" is your company car covered in shiny decals?

"Don't you know who IAM?"

That reminded me of that Eddie Izzard death star canteen sketch.

"do you know who I am."/"this is not a game of who the **** are you" etc.
