House insurance during extension

Hi everyone,

Our extension build is finally due to start soon so I phoned up my current insurer (Halifax) to tell them about it and they flat out refused to insure our house/contents whilst the building work is carried out.

So, can anyone recommend an insurer that will? Building and contents preferably.

Thanks.

We're with NFU and had building work start a few weeks ago. Wife says there was a tiny nominal premium increase but nothing in the scheme of things.

This came up recently.

What reason did Halifax say they wouldn't do it?

We had the same issue in 2017. We went through Hiscox. Its renovation/ extension cover you need. It was considerably more expensive and with reduced level of cover ( contents not covered for theft if workmen in the building etc.)

We didn’t have to make a claim so can’t comment on whether they are any good.

hope  you don't have to state you've been refused insurance now...

Sainsburys I think we used .

When we went through this it was way cheaper to shop for insurance (with building work cover) then shop around again (with no need for that) once it was done, cancel and buy the new one.

The cost of the extension will often be the cause of the decline. That or the home being un-occupied during the works. We've insurers who decline for works over £50k, some are fine with that.

If the contractors have their own insurance for the works (do check, should have contractors 'all risk' on their insurance schedule and even better JCT 6.5.1) there are a few insurers who will cover just your building during the works.

ProAktive or Renovation Plan can both do it and have a quote and buy facility.

Cheers everyone, yep it's the value of the building works exceeding halifax's threshold causing the problem.
