Hot Water Tank. Expansion Vessel. Bang!

Interesting evening...

Heard what I thought was a tap running in the utility room, but it was not...the expansion vessel on top of our hot water tank had ruptured...

Friendly plumber came round this morning to replace and also guided that regs and standards have changed a bit since our unvented mains hot water system was installed ~ 13 years ago. He also guided that said expansion vessel should be inspected every year and pressure re-set if required.

Looks like the expansion vessel was manufactured in 2008 and installed in 2009. It's never been checked...

So...anything else I need to be aware of with such things?

Thanks.

Sorry, daft question , but should the expansion tank above the hw tank get serviced as part of a boiler service? Pretty sure mine has never been looked at. The expansion vessel in the boiler on the other hand does get checked as part of the annual inspection.

If it's an unvented tank then it (and stuff like its expansion vessel) should be serviced/checked every year. That wouldn't normally fall under a normal boiler service, it's a separate item.

No prv fitted then?
Must be millions of expansion vessels attached to dhw tanks in the uk. I wonder how many get looked at on an annual basis, if ever.

Hmmm.
I wonder what happens with megaflo cylinders then, as the expansion tank is built in and not (easily) accessible.

The external skin ruptured or the diaphragm inside it?

If the former was there not a bit of a bang?!

Heatrae Sadia say in their Megaflo FAQ

We recommend all our appliances are serviced annually. Contact our customer support team on +44 (0)344 871 1535 to book an appointment.

Ours was installed in 2007 or 2008. Hasn’t been serviced as far as I know.

That site @trail_rat seems to offer a following of the instructions posted by the freaky little plastic tap and yikes drain for £129. Bargain! Or I can DIY in 10 minutes including going up and down the cellar steps?

Edit: maybe I’ll add it to the service of our still-feeling-new boiler on its anniversary.

The drain and recharge of the expansion vessel is easy enough, provided it's been installed sensibly. It's just a question of turning stuff on and off in order. The other stuff - particularly checking that the PRV is working properly (the most important bit), I'd probably want to leave to someone more qualified.

Thanks for the reminder! Our tundish was replaced a couple of months ago as it had scaled up and was leaking, the plumber told me we should have been servicing the megaflo every year but it has never been done since it was installed about 5 years ago.

I’m pretty sure the installer told us to get it looked at every year, but I forgot and it’s not one of those things that you naturally think of if you’ve never had one before.

Well they want you to replace the entire unit of course, but you should be able to fit an external vessel. Just like you can with a combi boiler (which sometime is required if the built in vessel is not big enough for the systme)
