Just been reading through MSN's top 50 horror movies (which unbelievably included The Invisible Man) and it got us talking about movies that truly scared the living hell out of you. These days it seems to be all about who can be the most violent as opposed to a proper mental scare fest.
First time around The Exorcist did nothing to me, I had a laugh with my mates and thought no more about it. Then I tried to watch it about 2 years ago, had to turn it off I was getting so freaked out!
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Leatherface, nuff said.
Zodiac - For some reason this one got right under my skin and had me sleeping restlessly for a few day after, great movie though.
Childs Play - Looks silly now, but as a young lad watching it, it ruined many a nights sleep!

Silent hill scared me !
I seem to be in the minority, but The Blair Witch Project was really scary. Luckily watched it before the hype, so knew nothing about it. I think that helped.
Evil Dead: also seen at the cinema before knowing anything about it. Was absolutely brilliant at the time. Remember vividly my sister in law being so freaked she wanted to leave the cinema.
I actually thought the ring very scary, the remake rather than the Japanese version, I have seen both. Bits of Event Horizon too. My favourite horror films are of the haunted house variety, hence I'm looking forward to the woman in black.
.Rec had me right on the edge of my seat. Audition was pretty good too.
The Mist is really good, and top marks for the ending, very non-hollywood.

Drag me to hell, that film scared the shiznit out of me..

Creepy and atmospheric is what I like too. Also love a bit of zombie action, walking Dead series 2 starts tomorrow!
Silent hill scared me !
Silent Hill on the PlayStation used to freak me out - I could only play it during the day.
Silent Hill on the PlayStation scared the bejesus out of me, properly creepy. The last 20 minutes of .Rec are on a par, and - as is often the way - you hardly see [i]anything[/i], let alone anything explicit.

indeedy, I hate horror movies (I get scared) but those listed by Loddrick are some of my favorite movies of all time.
+1 for Silent Hill on the PS. I actually stopped playing it because it was just totally freaking me out.
The Descent is probably the scariest film I've seen for a long while. Proper sense of dread combined with jump out your seat moments.
More recently, liked The Mist too, the ending is harrowing

i can handle most stuff, but the girl coming out of the TV in 'The ring' had me big time!

I remember playing, I think it was the first Resident Evil game. You're in a corridor near the beginning, still getting to grips with the controller, and you've got to shift some bookcases and furniture around to get through the door. So you're focussed into concentrating in puzzle-solving mode, working out what goes where, and suddenly both windows implode as two flesh-dripping hounds come steaming in at you.
It's a good job I didn't need the toilet, is all I can say.
I'm not sure anything has really scared me since young adulthood. Aline is a horro film, after that they are action films (IMHO). Though really you can forget them all after Aliens.
Probably the most disturbing film of recent memory is 28 Days Later. Nothing to do with the "un-dead". I could just see where it was going with Christopher Ecclestones little commune of army grunts. Only watched it once and not sure if I ever will again.
The Exorcist - saw it when I was about 18 and didn't like it. To be fair I really didn't understand it, at the time I just thought it was an excuse for violence and potty mouth. I want to watch it now but I must admit it really does give me a sense of dread when I think about putting it on.
Did "Drag Me To Hell" really scare you? I'm surprised, but as said we are all different. I thought it enjoyable but not scary and it is effectively a remake of "Night of the Demon" which was an adaption of M R James "Casting the Runes" which are in order a good B&W "horror" film and short story.
For eeriness watch "Whistle and I Will Come" with Michael Horden and directed by Jonathon Millar, recommended. I was sadly disappointed by the Mark Gattiss adaptation of last X-mas.
Personally I avoid modern horror like the plague (of zombies), well US anyway. Just Torture Porn or really excellent gore but where's the heart?
I much prefer the X-mas stuff done in the late 60's/70s such as "Oh Whistle.. For me there is little better than a good ghost story in a book, TV or Film at Christmas. Really completes the season for me.

Salem's Lot always used to scare me as a kid, watched it recently and it was a bit pants really. All except the scene with the kid vampire floating outside the window, still spooky 🙂

The bit that lives with me is the bit (quite near the start of the game as I couldn't carry on) when you are running down a deserted street in the mist, echoing footsteps following you. I just couldn't trust the game to not deliver another unexpected attack.

Did "Drag Me To Hell" really scare you?
Yes, but i had smoked some some very very strong w**d. i had to turn it off, i cant remember another time i had to turn off a movie.
Anything with Tom Cruise.
The Fly when I was about 10.
I lasted a few minutes of Drag Me To Hell, before I decided it was shite and turned it off.
+1 for 28 Days Later. I've had 28 Weeks Later since it came out on DVD and daren't watch it.

Insidious and the strangers gave my girlfriend a few nightmares recently. I don't really get scared by films but computer games can scare me: silent hill 1 & 2, the cradle bit in thief 3 and a few jumps in FEAR.

Good call! I loved that film, it had an excellent B movie feel to it, but was still gripping throughout. And the ending was just great.
some good choices above, silent hill definatley up there with scariest memmories, lived on my own at the time played in total darkness for about 4 hours and then didnt sleep for a week, blair witch ending just about the only film that has ever interupted my sleep.

the last broadcast a bit older but very good found footage movie
and my fave of the last year "the collector" dig it out its brilliant
as you can probably tell i love the found footage type movies if anyone can point me in the direction of any that i may have missed let me know
The opening escape sequence in 28 weeks later is superb, as is the Masive Attack tune.

Stephen Kings - It , watched with friends during the teenage years with a bit of weed ...the 2 mile walk home in the middle of the night / country roads was scary as hell , we all walked down the centre of the road!

28 days later was good, I love a bit of post apocalyptic horror. Watched 28 weeks later at the cinema and found it really depressing.
Ghost stories are my favourite though, spine tingling and spooky rather than gore.
I'm also one of the few that was left feeling very spooked by Blair Witch. Watched it in the first week of release over in the US while working over there, went to cinema on my own, didn't know anything really about the film but it was the only thing that was still to start (was about 11:30pm when I went in).
The ending left me sitting in my seat absolutely dumb struck, and although I knew it couldn't have really been 'found footage' it still scared the life out of me. There were people screaming in the cinema who (from a bit of earwigging as we left the cinema) honestly thought it was a snuff film they had witnessed. The media around the film was excellently handled, and there were a lot of the US beleiving it was real.
Having bigged up the film to all my mates, almost everyone that saw it after knowing what it was about thought it was a bit shit, and not really scary.

After my sleep got back to normal I read the book, back to square one. It lives way way under th ebed totally out of reach, never to be read again.
