Big buggers, loads of them crawling all over a lilac bush in our garden at the moment, not seen so many in one place before. Look like they are eating the bark. Pretty scary looking but don't seem aggressive or annoying like wasps.

Just don’t do anything to piss them off, otherwise it’ll be like the chopper attack in Apocalypse Now!

Aren't they supposed to be more docile than wasps but more fierce once riled?

Beautiful creatures, but people do get scared by them, as much by the noise as anything else.

I know a guy who lived in the New Forest and can in to find the spare room has a hornets nest in it as they had left the window open for a week and they moved in.  He just shut the door for the rest of the summer and let them get on with it.  They all left the nest in the autumn and he got an amazing paper nest and his room back.

There is a spot in my garden that a hornet or hornets keep visiting on a ten minute schedule.

I initially thought it was a nest but they just keep flying to and fro. The spot is on the stream bank with a lot of dead vegetation that they disappear into so cant see if they are collecting bark. They even fly at night apparently. Their flight path coincided with my wife being out watering one evening and a hornet was very interested in seeing what she was doing. She didn't panic and it flew off.

You can hear them before you see them as they have quite a deep drone.

Cool.

They chew up the bark to make their nest...

Last week I was attacked by a swarm of bees whilst riding through heather . Heart rate was accelerated somwhat during my escape.
