Strange sight in the garden this morning, was making pretty loud crunching sounds as it bit the victim's head off

Are you sure they weren't just kissing?
The dragonfly is almost the same colours, maybe the hornet was confused 😉
I can't see past the weeds, what hornet?
^ well more of a field really, weeds are only common successful plants and good for wildlife of course.....
Free the weeds!
I have also witnessed such a takedown, a hornet tackling a blubottle in midair. Chewed the wings, legs and head off and flew away with the lunchbox for a busy days Horneting.
Cool.
Years ago, in Greece, I maimed a wasp with a handy flick and put it in front of a praying mantis.
The mantis rocked back and forth for a few secs, grabbed the wasp and proceeded to chomp away on it's head. Glorious.
