Just sitting here cracking my christmas nuts, shooting nut bits all over the place. Theres just not enough modulation in these manual nut crackers...

That got me thinking, ive got an old set of Hope mono minis not in use, how could i go about setting them up as a table top nut cracker?

Id need to maybe split the caliper to allow bigger nuts to fit, is this possible? Then have adjustable stops for bigger nuts. And some mini bars to mount the lever on.

Sounds like a bit of a project, reckon it would work?

I'd start by working out the leverage ratios and see if you'd get enough force.

Non starter I suspect. The tiny amount of movement the leverage ratio on a brake supplies, well I think you’ll just flex your nuts without cracking them 😱

I thought this would be a thread about Hope releasing an over-enthusiastically sprung dropper post

If i mounted one half of the caliper on a ratchet track, it could be moved in/out to suit nut size - move it in a click as you crack kinda thing?

an over-enthusiastically sprung dropper post

I suspect Specialized have a patent that they will vigorously defend 🌰🌰

Non mono could work but as said you would need some sort of flexible clamping arrangement

Could you plumb both levers into one caliper for extra throw?

You would need a method to retract the pistons after each nut. And ideally not needing to pump the pistons out each time.

Nothing like a bit of Dot 5.1 with your walnuts to keep you regular..!

If you used M4's you can reseal them for mineral oil using RX4 bits, I'm sure chilli oil or similar would work fine.

C2's. They have springs in the back of the piston attaches to the inside of the caliper, which pulls them back.Plus you can split the caliper, so having two  would give you plenty of room to place the nut.

You could even use 2 fronts, so it says HOPE on left and right

The piston itself is metal not plastic, and has a big magnet on the face of it so it could hold jaws of some sort, maybe have a knurled or dimpled facing to securely hold the nut in place

.

In fact the C2 would probably be the ideal caliper to use. The hose/nipple attachment is in the same area, not one being offset, and you could have the hose with a Y shaped fitting, so it all runs off the same lever. Two large through holes for M6 bolts to attach it to whatever.

The only problem you would have is finding some way to permanently block the oil transfer hole.

I find a mallet and tea towel do the job without the risk of mixing up the dot5. 1 with the mineral oil. YMMV 😉

Can't believe I'm the first to suggest Shimano as a far better alternative 🙂
