Meanwhile, in S France, Mandelieu-la-Napoule (near Cannes) is nice, as are Frejus & St Raphael
St Tropez is a pain to get to by car

North Spain is nothing like the Costa Blanca / Torremolinos / Magaluf.
The island Hvar in Croatia is pretty cool, had a great time there last year. The beaches are pebbly, not sandy though...
I lived in a place called Ornos Marathokambos for a while on Samos, not surprised you keep heading back!
Honeymooned in Corsica- amazing island, will go back at some point.

I second Slovenia although it only has a tiny stretch of beach (i think the coastline is about 3 miles long) but if you like lakes and mountains then it's a great place to go.
Cassis, Bouches-du-Rhône, France

not when I looked as I had the same thoughts - but it was dearer!
PeterHerold - Bit off topic but... I first went to Sardinia about 15 years ago, to the area North of Olbia and it appeared to be unspoilt, but with some tastefully secluded rich peoples play pads scattered around. I went back 2 years ago with my wife, flying in to Alghero, and we toured around the north coast towards La Maddalena.
I was very dissapointed. The north coast appeared more industrial, and development just appeared to be going mad! So is the east coast still the nice quiet place I remember Sardinia being, or is it too now loosing its charm?

Uh?
@FunkyDunc: The east coast is much as it was when we first came here 20 years ago cycle touring. That's why we came to live here. It is the nicest part of Sardinia, according to the Sards themselves. Where you have been are the areas with fewest mountain bike routes (see mtb-forum.it routes in Sardinia) and that's cos they are the most developed areas (La Maddalena is nice but it too is developed). ciao Peter
