Hello,

My 08 Jazz is getting old and recently had it's catalytic converter stolen which is quite common I hear.

So we want to replace it. New car needs to be automatic and I really like the rear seats in the Jazz allowing it to become a little van.

Budget is £7k max.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Another Jazz?

Our '07 Jazz is somehow surviving but it's being replaced with another Jazz the moment it does die.

Every car has a catalytic converter on it that can be stolen, it's not unique to the jazz.

I appreciate that but I think older Honda's and Toyota's are particularly easy to access. I'm not sure if the newer Jazz's are harder to rob?

My mum and dad just replaced their Honda Jazz automatic only last week with...

*pauses to build a sense of tension, X Factor style*...

A newer Honda Jazz automatic

I believe that's a unique trick in the Jazz.

Fwiw, our Seat Ibiza estate ('ST' in seat parlance) is a fabulous thing. It's now 9 years and 95k in, nothing other than a rusty exhaust over normal servicing and running costs since 3 years old when we bought it.

It's lower than the Jazz, but the boot is huge. Like a tardis. The seats fold flat too.

They all dangle the cat underneath the car.

Cheers Matt, a Seat Ibiza estate is one of the cars on the list and a local garage has one. The other would be a Fabia estate but the Seat looks better.

Smart forfour - auto, fancy folding seats in back, had ours 6 years now with no issues (touch wood). Only change I'd make would be to go for the turbo engine.

Get another Jazz, our 05 reg is still going strong! XL bike in with only front wheel off is magic!

The Seat looks nicer and we thought marginally more comfy.

The Skoda is bigger and boxier inside.

Other than that, they're the same car.

Get rid of the Jazz? How will Mrs Miggins transport her lovely apple pie to the church fete?

Hopefully via a Mustang V8. Long live Mrs Miggins.

nearly. I nearly got a new Jazz in about 2004 based on that versatility alone. Instead bought a used Mercedes A-class long wheelbase. Higher driving position, bigger boot, and the seats went completely flush with the boot floor to create a large ‘cargo’ space for bikes. Cheaper too. Though maybe spares, repairs, and that special Mercedes dealership surcharge offset that somewhat.

They’re too old to recommend as an option to the OP now though. And the ‘new’ A-class has a tiny boot and is almost too short to put a modern mtb in the back even with the front wheel off. Does take a roof rack though and I still have a Thule feet and aero bar set in the garage.

Get something without a cat? An electric car? A diesel- I didn’t think diesels had cats.

Tesla? A model 3 can fit a couple of bikes in the back. Though its saloon design makes ‘posting’ them in tricky. You can get it with a tow bar.

Cheers all, I'm not convinced by electric yet, there are quite a few Nissan Leafs for sale locally though.

A Yeti is nice but they are usually very high mileage at my budget and automatic.

Both petrol and diesel have catalysts fitted according to a quick Google...

Fabia Estate is ugly as and not as nice to drive as the Seat, but I believe has more boot space, seats up or seats down.

oh yes. I’m just so out of date!

Catalytic converters (CATs) have been fitted in the exhaust of the majority of petrol cars manufactured since 1992 and diesel cars since 2001.
