As a result of having to avoid Fructose I had to investigate alternative energy drinks and hit a bit of a blank, but discovered that maltodextrin in isolation is perfectly adequate for fueling long endurance rides. High5 and Hammer also use protein in their corresponding endurance mixtures and given I have a large bag of whey protein I was keen to hear whether others make their own maltodextrin / protein solutions and if so what ratios do you go with?

I am also keen to understand whether the 60g / hour limit applies to maltodextrin as I have read alternative articles that suggest you can push the 60g limit much higher?

Just now need to find a natural freeze dried flavoring.

On very long rides i use 4 parts maltodextrin to 1 part whey and it really helps with muscle cramps and recovery. The only issue is - ensuring the camelbak is totally clean after because whey helps grow some nasty stuff in a left out bladder and the mix tastes "milk shakey" But its been totally fine.

Oh, I'm going to partially hijack this if I may....

Was always a big fan on Allsports winter training formula ( https://www.allsports-nutrition.com/winter-training-formula.html) but now I'm vegan I'm interesting in a vegan DIY version if I can bodge one....

Really interesting.

Do you just go 4:1 or do use dextrose at all?

You probably already know this, but keep the camelbak in the freezer and you don't get funky growth.

If you can't get a powdered flavour why not just buy a small bottle of food essence? Try vanilla to start with. Be very careful on dosage though, probably start at 0.1 percent and see how it tastes. That's 1cc of flavour per litre of drink.

Come to think of it, it might be better to disperse the liquid flavour in the maltodextrin powder, giving it a good mix up.

I did read that and thought. Oh, that's not good, but then the counter argument also applies to their product. Who do you believe?

maltodextrin is a byproduct of industrial farming / food production that contains a mix of saccarides and what that mix is is not well controlled. Its other name / it is derived from "high fructose corn syrup"!
