Booked a villa near Nerja last year without any problems.
Booked a couple of places in south florida and everything was good
Along with VRBO, Homeaway are one of the biggest listing sites for owner owned/operated holiday rentals. My bosses use it for their properties. Should all be legit.
Several times, often for just the area the OP is looking at.
